Nguyễn Phúc Khoát, the eighth lord of the Nguyễn Dynasty, played a significant role in the development of Đàng Trong. He was known as the “King of Áo Dài,” renowned for his diplomatic skills and strategic vision. However, alongside his great achievements, we must also recognize the important role played by his wife, Lady Trần Thị Xạ, also known as Chiêu Nghi.
In the feudal era, Lady Trần Thị Xạ was an exemplary figure of a court lady. With her talents and virtues, she made significant contributions to maintaining order and stability within the palace. Historical records do not elaborate much on her, but the existence of her separate tomb, nestled quietly in the Kim Ngọc mountains, speaks volumes. According to renowned cultural and historical researcher, Professor Trần Lâm Biền, “Lady Chiêu Nghi was not just a wife but also a crucial factor in helping Lord Nguyễn Phúc Khoát build a strong dynasty.”
On July 22, 1750, Lady Chiêu Nghi passed away at the young age of 34. Lord Nguyễn Phúc Khoát was so grief-stricken that he bestowed upon her the title of Chiêu Nghi Liệt Phu Nhân, with the posthumous name Từ Mẫn. Remarkably, the stone stele recording her life and merits remains intact to this day. Despite nearly 300 years having passed, the inscriptions and carvings on the stele are still sharp, testifying to the artistry of the artisans of that time.
The Sole Intact Tomb: A Mystery Unveiled
Nestled on a small hill in Ngọc Hồ Village, Hương Thọ Commune, the Chiêu Nghi Tomb is a unique relic in the heart of Huế City. Compared to other tombs of the Nguyễn Dynasty, the Chiêu Nghi Tomb exudes humility and simplicity while still retaining a sense of solemnity and grandeur.
According to researchers, this is the only tomb of the Nguyễn lords that remains intact after historical upheavals. Notably, during the Tây Sơn period, when Nguyễn Huệ’s army entered and destroyed the tombs of the Nguyễn lords, the Chiêu Nghi Tomb was the sole one left untouched. This remains a significant question for historians. Some theories suggest that Lady Chiêu Nghi’s tomb may have been hidden or held some secret that kept it from attracting enemies’ attention.
The tomb complex is designed with two concentric brick walls. The outer wall stands nearly 1.8 meters high, with two sturdy gate pillars. The inner wall is slightly taller and leads to the central area, where a two-tiered rectangular tomb is situated. Built with bricks and plastered with lime, the tomb has, over time, revealed the exquisite construction techniques of the past due to the plaster’s peeling.
About 8 meters in front of the tomb stands the stone stele house, inscribed with Chinese characters recording Lady Chiêu Nghi’s life and merits. The intricate carvings, combined with a stylized phoenix image, create a harmonious and sacred whole. The stele house stands as a silent witness to centuries of historical vicissitudes, reminding us of the sacrifices and contributions of court ladies of bygone eras.
