What is the Significance of the New Year House Visiting Custom?
The New Year house visiting custom is an age-old tradition in Vietnamese culture. It involves having a guest, believed to be the first person to step into the host’s house in the new year, bring good fortune and set the tone for the rest of the year.
In modern times, many people hold the belief that the guest can influence the host family’s luck, especially in business ventures. As a result, some families may carefully select or even hire a specific person to be their first guest of the new year.
Ideally, the guest should be someone with a virtuous, optimistic, and cheerful personality, as well as a successful and harmonious life. This is based on the belief that the guest’s positive energy and outlook will rub off on the host family. The house visiting custom is usually performed right after the new year’s eve or on the morning of the first day of the new year.
Who Should Be the Guest for the Year of the Snake, 2025?
According to one school of thought, for the upcoming Year of the Snake, it is considered auspicious if the guest is born in the year of the Rooster (tam hop) or the Dragon (nhi hop) as these signs are in harmony with the Snake.
However, there is a contrasting belief that the guest’s age should correspond to the host’s age, following specific guidelines.
Host’s Age: Rat
If you are a Rat, consider inviting a male guest born in the following years: 1955, 1962, 1965, 1982, 1985, 1992, or 1995. For a female guest, the following years are considered lucky: 1946, 1956, 1958, 1961, 1968, 1971, 1976, 1986, 1988, and 1991.
Host’s Age: Ox
For an Ox host, lucky male guests were born in 1951, 1962, 1965, 1971, 1972, 1975, or 1992. If you prefer a female guest, consider inviting someone born in 1951, 1965, 1971, 1975, 1981, 1985, or 1995.
