Your washing machine is an appliance that is often overlooked when it comes to cleaning, but it needs regular care. If not properly cleaned, limescale and mold can build up, and unpleasant odors will cling to the machine. Cleaning your washing machine every month or two will not only make it more efficient but also help reduce your electricity bills.

Cleaning expert Karren Barrigan from Housetastic.co.uk shares a simple yet effective way to clean your washing machine: “The easiest and most effective way to clean your washing machine drum is to run an empty load.”

“Simply put some detergent in the drum and select a high-temperature setting of about 60°C. Try running the hottest cycle your machine has to kill bacteria and remove dirt and limescale buildup.”

For a deeper clean, you can add a spoonful of baking soda to the drum and some white vinegar to the detergent compartment. Once the cycle is complete, clean the detergent drawer by removing it and soaking it in warm, soapy water.

According to Karren Barrigan, “The detergent drawer is often closed, so old detergent can get damp and moldy. Using your washing machine with a moldy detergent drawer can cause bacteria and odors to cling to your clothes.”

To prevent this, regularly remove the drawer and scrub it with an old toothbrush. After cleaning the drum and drawer, don’t forget to clean the filter at the bottom of the machine. Although it is essential, the filter is often overlooked as it is hidden behind a small flap. The filter prevents dirt and fabric fibers from entering the drum. If left uncleaned, it can cause blockages, flooding, and musty odors.

Karren emphasizes, “Remove the filter according to the manufacturer’s instructions and rinse it with water to dislodge any dirt. After cleaning, wipe the filter chamber with a cloth to remove any excess, then reinstall the filter and cover.”

Make sure to clean these three areas at least every few months to keep your washing machine in good working order and maintain its efficiency.
