Here are four ways to turn on your air conditioner without using the remote control:

1. Turn on/off the AC with your phone

If you don’t have the remote, you can use your smartphone to turn on your AC from any position in the room. However, it’s important that your smartphone has an IR (infrared) sensor, which is a device that emits infrared signals for remote control purposes (effective up to 10m).

You can then install a remote control app that is compatible with your AC brand, such as IR Remote for Android and iOS, ASmart Remote IR for Samsung or HTC phones, or App Tado° Cooling for iPhones.

After installing the app, you can choose to control your TV or AC… This way, you’ve turned your smartphone into a remote control that has almost all the functions of the original one. Additionally, it’s extremely useful when you want to adjust the temperature in the dark without having to use a flashlight or turn on the lights.

2. Turn on the AC using the power button on the indoor unit

Most air conditioners nowadays have an On/Off button for quick power on/off, located under the air filter cover or on the left side of the fan on the indoor unit. Depending on the brand, the power button may be in a different position.

When you want to turn on the AC without the remote, simply find this button and turn it on.

For brands like Daikin, Mitsubishi, Funiki, and Gree, the power button is usually integrated next to the Timer and AC operation indicator lights on the left side of the fan on the indoor unit.

For Panasonic, LG, and Hitachi ACs, the power button is located under the air filter of the indoor unit. You need to remove this air filter to see the power button.

This simple method allows you to easily turn on your AC when you don’t have the remote control.

3. Turn on/off the AC using the circuit breaker

For larger AC units in places like auditoriums, classrooms, or meeting rooms, it’s common to turn the unit on and off using a circuit breaker instead of a remote control. This is because the space is large, and the remote control could easily get lost.

If you only use your home AC at a certain temperature, consider installing a separate circuit breaker in the room just for the AC. This way, you won’t have to worry about misplacing the remote, and you’ll still be able to control the AC if the remote breaks.

Rest assured that when you turn off the AC with the circuit breaker, the temperature setting will be saved, and when you turn it back on, it will return to the same temperature.

If you have a central smart home controller, you can use it to control your AC.

Smart home systems are becoming increasingly popular. These central controllers are equipped with IR sensors and RF transmitters and receivers.
