Orchids are a popular type of flower that is loved by many people. They are often bought to decorate for Tet and are offered on altars. Orchid stems grow straight, and the flowers are vibrant in color, symbolizing good luck for the homeowners.
When buying orchids, many people encounter the problem of the flowers wilting after 1-2 days, or even the flowers not blooming at all. The reason is that they accidentally buy the type of flowers that have been exposed to cold temperatures.
Tips for choosing Tet orchids
To avoid buying flowers that have been exposed to cold temperatures, a flower shop owner at Quang Ba Flower Market (the largest wholesale flower market in Hanoi) shared that cold-exposed orchids usually have a withered stem. When they are taken out of the cold storage, the leaves will be wet and have dew on them. If left until noon, the leaves will dry up and show signs of yellowing on both sides of the leaves.
When buying, customers should look at the stem and the flower spike. If both of these parts are withered, they should not be chosen. Instead, choose stems with a plump flower spike and no signs of yellowing or withering.
Choose orchids with dry roots, robust stems, and fresh green leaves that are not damaged. The flower spike should be green from top to bottom. When arranging the orchids, it is advisable to trim the top part of the flower spike to prevent it from growing too long. This trick helps the flowers bloom more beautifully.
Tips for keeping orchids fresh for a long time
After bringing the flowers home, immediately immerse them in a bucket of water. Soak them for about 4 hours to fully hydrate the flowers before arranging them. Use a sharp knife or scissors to trim the base of the flower spike, then immediately immerse it in a bucket of water. Once all the flowers have been trimmed, prepare for arranging. Take the flowers out of the water bucket at the same level as they will be arranged.
The flower vase must be thoroughly cleaned. Cut off the excess leaves at the base of the flower spike to prevent the leaves from being submerged in water and rotting.
Regularly change the water and clean the vase to keep the flowers fresh. You can use flower nutrients or add sugar and lemon to the water to provide nourishment for the flowers and make them bloom more beautifully.
