Hair loss has become a significant concern for today’s youth, especially those who regularly work under pressure and overtime. This issue is not new, and our ancestors left us with a saying: “Out of ten bald men, nine are wealthy.”
While this saying may be deemed inappropriate, many young people often have a negative perception of hair loss. They believe it will affect their image and even feel insecure about it. However, why did the ancients associate baldness with wealth?
In reality, this can be explained by life experiences. The saying is a conclusion drawn from the experiences of previous generations. Many young people tend to have healthy hair during their student days, even without meticulous care. However, when they enter the working world, especially in office environments or when juggling work and studies, they often have to pull all-nighters, leading to hair weakening.
This indicates that diligent studying and working can induce significant stress, resulting in hair loss. Hence, the old saying suggests that baldness largely stems from hard work in academics and labor.
Those with a diligent and hardworking nature tend to have a higher propensity for wealth accumulation, hence the saying, “Out of ten bald men, nine are wealthy.”
According to a study by the University of Pennsylvania, bald men are often perceived as having greater influence and achieving more success in life.
As reported by a news outlet, American scientist Albert E. Mannes, himself a bald man, conducted a study in 2012 with 59 participants. He aimed to understand people’s reactions to bald men by showing them a series of images.
The participants viewed each picture twice: once with a man with hair and once with the same man but with his head shaved. Afterward, they shared that they believed the bald men had more influence, appeared larger in size, and seemed more potent.
Interestingly, the men in the images had to be entirely bald. Those with partial hair loss were generally seen as less attractive and weaker.
Tech entrepreneur Seth Godin, who has sported a bald look for over 20 years, explained to the Wall Street Journal that the reason bald men are perceived as more influential is that “I’m not saying that just by shaving your head, you’ll be successful, but you’ve done something positive.”
Additionally, bald men are also considered more intelligent. A global study by psychologist Ronald Henss at the University of Saarland, involving over 20,000 participants, revealed that bald men are often perceived as appearing older, wiser, and more intellectual.
In the saying, “Out of ten bald men, nine are wealthy,” it can be added that “The one who is not wealthy will be lonely.” This implies that nine out of ten go bald due to their hard work, while the remaining one’s baldness is not from a lack of effort but rather poor health.
This person may not achieve wealth through diligent studying because their hair loss could be related to ill health, preventing them from studying and working continuously. Therefore, they are less likely to be valued and loved by others, leading to loneliness.
