Sexual health is an integral part of human life, encompassing basic needs such as eating, resting, personal hygiene, and especially sexual intimacy – a natural instinct intrinsic to human existence and the perpetuation of our species.
How did ancient soldiers manage their sexual health needs?
In ancient Chinese militaries – comprising predominantly male soldiers – addressing sexual health needs was a significant challenge, especially given the harsh living conditions and prolonged periods away from home. To tackle this issue, a range of methods were employed, from humane to harsh approaches.
One relatively “gentler” approach was allowing the wives of high-ranking officers or soldiers to accompany their husbands on military campaigns. This enabled them to take care of their husbands’ daily needs, support their sexual health, and alleviate feelings of loneliness and homesickness. However, this practice was not common as women during those times were typically expected to stay at home, and living within the dangerous military environment was no easy feat.

On the other hand, a more “practical” yet ruthless method involved the utilization of “military comfort women” – women selected and assigned by the court to serve the soldiers. These women often lacked social standing, had no autonomy, and were vulnerable to abuse. For them, being reduced to tools for sexual release was a tragic and inescapable fate.
Additionally, during military conquests, soldiers were encouraged to take women from the conquered lands. This was seen as a “reward” for victory and a means to boost morale, despite the severe consequences for the victims – innocent women subjected to forced captivity and the violation of their dignity.
These practices not only reflect the brutality of war but also expose the skewed perception of women in feudal societies, where they were regarded as possessions or instruments to serve the power and desires of men.

Today, there has been a marked shift in perspectives regarding sexual health needs within the military. Modern militaries strive for gender equality, providing soldiers with opportunities to maintain healthy and civilized spiritual lives through social interactions, mate-searching events, and organized activities – a far cry from the inhumane measures of the past. The inclusion of women in modern armed forces has also fostered a more equitable, respectful, and humane environment compared to previous eras.
