Yagi was the strongest storm in the South China Sea in 30 years and the strongest to make landfall in Vietnam in 70 years. It was an extremely powerful storm with very high winds, a large scope, and a strong core, with winds of up to 155 mph and gusts of up to 190 mph. The storm lasted for a long duration, causing extensive damage and severely affecting most of Northern Vietnam. The image shows the devastation in Yen Bai City after the storm.

In the aftermath of the storm, many localities are still in the process of recovering from the damage. Homes, furniture, appliances, and goods have been damaged. People have been cleaning and tidying up for over a week, and it’s “still not done.”

Responding to the government’s call and the support of the people across the country, Vinamilk has provided over 550,000 nutritional products (equivalent to nearly VND 3 billion) to people in 11 affected provinces and cities: Hanoi, Yen Bai, Thai Nguyen, Son La, Cao Bang, Hung Yen, Vinh Phuc, Tuyen Quang, Bac Ninh, Ninh Binh, and Lao Cai.

The storm hit right at the beginning of the new school year. Nearly a week after the storm, students and teachers of Kim Dong Primary School (Minh Tan Ward, Yen Bai City, Yen Bai Province) were able to return to their classrooms. The marks of the flood waters can still be seen on the school walls. The school was flooded up to the first floor, reaching a height of nearly 10 feet.

The students’ books and belongings were soaked and have been laid out to dry in the sun in the school yard over the past few days. Ms. Do Thi Diem Huong, a teacher at Kim Dong Primary School, shared: “Kim Dong Primary School was severely damaged by the flood. Out of nearly 1,000 students, more than 50% of the students’ families were affected, with complete loss of property due to the flood waters. All teaching equipment and facilities in the school were also damaged and cannot be used.”

Vinamilk prioritized providing nutritional products to the students. Following this, the company is also implementing the program “Overcoming Natural Disasters – Continuing the Future” with the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union. It is expected that an additional VND 3 billion worth of nutritional products will be supported by the community and employees of Vinamilk, with a further VND 3 billion worth of products contributed by Vinamilk. All of these will be given to children and students in difficult circumstances in the affected provinces.

The central market area of Tran Yen district (Yen Bai province) was flooded with water up to 6 feet and mud up to 3 feet. “Every day, there were hundreds of people cleaning, sweeping, and clearing the mud. It took continuous work for 6-7 days for the road to be in this condition, and in some places, the mud is still up to 8-12 inches high,” said Ms. Nguyen Thi Loan, a resident of Song Thao street in Tran Yen district. She added, “In my life, I have never seen such a big flood. Near the river, there are two houses with elderly people over 70 and 80 years old living alone. During the flood, the water rose to the second floor, and they couldn’t get out, so they waved to call for help.”

In Tran Yen district, Yen Bai City, Yen Bai Province, local people, volunteers, and officers and soldiers of the 5th Battalion, 148th Regiment, 316th Division, Army Corps 2, have been working tirelessly to overcome the consequences of the storm and floods.

Vinamilk delivered milk and drinks directly to the people and the forces working to overcome the consequences of the storm and floods.

“It is only when you go to the affected areas that you truly understand the severity of the destruction caused by natural disasters and the losses suffered by the people. But it is also in these difficult times that the warmth of human kindness shines through. As a participant in the relief efforts, I, along with my colleagues, hope to contribute more to the community through Vinamilk’s activities,” shared Mr. Ta Xuan Tuan, Vinamilk’s Northern Business Director.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Tuyen, a driver for the Hanoi Warehouse Enterprise of Vinamilk, shared that he did not know how many trips he had made to support the deeply flooded areas of Hanoi, as well as Thai Nguyen and Yen Bai. He would leave at 5 am and return to the warehouse late in the evening, then continue to unload and prepare for the next day’s trip. “Although it is more tiring than the regular work, I am proud to be able to contribute and join the company in providing relief to the people and engaging in charitable activities,” said Mr. Tuyen.

Over 3,500 gifts, including milk, water, and cakes, were prepared by Vinamilk employees and delivered to the people of Yen Bai and Thai Nguyen. Most of the households have elderly people and children who are in great need of improved health and nutrition during this challenging period.

In addition, doctors and pharmacists from the An Khang Polyclinic (Vinamilk) in Ho Chi Minh City have prepared 600 family medicine bags to send to the people in the northern provinces of Ha Giang, Tuyen Quang, etc. The medicine bags include basic and essential types of medicine, along with specific and clear instructions for the people to use.
