It’s common for parents to want to provide their children with the best of everything, from financial stability to health and affection. However, some parents go too far and shield their children from any challenges or difficulties. As a result, these children may appear to have an easy and comfortable life, but when faced with adversity, they often lack the inner strength and resilience to cope.
To raise resilient and independent children, parents should avoid giving them too much of the following three things:
Money
While money is important for a secure life, giving children too much can lead to a lack of appreciation for the value of money and hard work. Parents should refrain from telling their children that they can have as much money as they want and that their parents can provide for them indefinitely. Instead, teach them the importance of earning money and the value of hard work. Let them understand that money is meant for security, and they should learn to spend it wisely. Having too much money can make children vulnerable to negative influences and give them a distorted view of life.
Avoid giving your children excessive amounts of money, especially when they are starting out in life. Consider offering them loans or investments with conditions, but do not simply hand them large sums of cash. As you age, do not give them your savings or depend on them to support you financially. Remember to maintain your own financial security and do not expect your children to be your sole providers.
Doing things for them
While it’s natural for parents to want to shield their children from hardship, it’s important to let them take on responsibilities. Teach them to be accountable for their actions and to understand the value of love and support. Avoid doing everything for them, such as organizing their school supplies, choosing their clothes, cleaning up their toys, or cooking their meals. Let them learn to do these tasks according to their age and abilities. By doing everything for them, you hinder their growth and ability to take care of themselves. Show your love by teaching them how to do things, rather than doing everything for them.
Dependence
Allow your children to experience the consequences of their actions when they make mistakes. When they have goals, encourage them to find their own path to achieving them. Don’t rush to bail them out or use your connections to solve their problems. If they make a mistake at school, let them face the consequences, even if the teacher is a family friend. When they embark on a new business venture, let them figure out their own strategies before offering your advice or connections. By giving them too many options and dependencies, you hinder their ability to be resourceful and discover their true potential. Let them forge their own path and build their future with their own hands. Offer support, but don’t provide all the answers or opportunities. Remember, a life without challenges is a life without growth.
