2K1 Actress Opens Up About Her “Chemistry” with Screen Heartthrob Quoc Truong
In her first leading role in a feature film, Phuong Thanh was given the opportunity to act alongside a cast of experienced actors, including the famous “screen heartthrob” Quoc Truong, the “hundred-billion-dong actor” Mac Van Khoa, and the “youngest Vietnamese actress” Mai Cat Vi. Throughout the filming process, Phuong Thanh received tremendous support from her senior colleagues, which helped her overcome numerous challenges and pressures associated with carrying a complex role that was crucial in driving the film’s narrative.

Phuong Thanh’s first leading role was in a challenging horror film alongside seasoned colleagues.
Phuong Thanh shared that her most memorable scene was a duet with Mac Van Khoa. “On set, Khoa gave me a lot of advice on how to portray my character’s emotions. In real life, he is friendly, humorous, and always creates a cheerful atmosphere for the crew. However, when he’s in character, he displays a completely different side. I greatly admire this contrast, and it’s no exaggeration to say that Khoa is the versatile actor I aspire to be,” she said.

Meanwhile, despite their 13-year age gap, Phuong Thanh and Quoc Truong had extremely adorable interactions, both on and off-screen. At the showcase event on May 30, the pair caused a stir on social media with their humorous and lovable dynamic.
“It’s both a joy and a bit overwhelming to receive such high praise from a famous and talented senior actor like Truong,” shared Phuong Thanh. “On set, he chatted with me a lot so that I could feel comfortable, which helped our on-screen chemistry flow more naturally.”
Phuong Thanh had great chemistry with her co-star Quoc Truong despite their 13-year age difference.
Quoc Truong, for his part, readily admitted that he couldn’t help but be captivated by the fresh-faced, beautiful newcomer, Phuong Thanh. “This is the first time I’ve acted with such a brand-new actress,” he said. “When I met Phuong Thanh, she was like a character come to life from the pages of a book. She has a natural, radiant beauty and brings a strong presence to the role of Lan.”
“It’s only natural to have feelings when faced with someone new, young, and beautiful like Phuong Thanh, especially since my character also falls for Lan in the film. To portray those emotions truthfully, I had to genuinely feel them myself, which then translated into the looks and gestures that convince the audience that my character is smitten,” he continued. “I appreciate beauty, and yes, I’m drawn to attractive people. However, I’ve been in this industry for a long time, and I make sure to leave my character behind when the filming ends.”

The Radiant Beauty of the Hung Yen-born Actress Making Her Film Debut
Phuong Thanh was born in 2001 in Hung Yen province. When she was three years old, her family moved to southern Vietnam, allowing her to fluently speak both Northern and Southern dialects. This linguistic versatility gives the young actress an advantage in her acting career, enabling her to portray diverse characters with distinct cultural and regional backgrounds.
The 2K1 actress, Phuong Thanh, hails from Hung Yen and makes her film debut as the lead in “Ut Lan: Oan Linh Giu Cua,” directed by Tran Trong Dan.
Phuong Thanh’s journey into the world of cinema was unexpected. She initially studied at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Fine Arts and had envisioned a future in the field. However, after graduating, her work as a model for photos and TV commercials led her to discover her passion for acting.
“Since childhood, I’ve loved painting, which is why I chose to study fine arts, dreaming of telling stories through colors,” shared the actress. “But after graduating, I stumbled into acting through some TVC work and social media content. This unexpected turn unlocked aspects of myself I never knew, and I decided to pursue acting professionally. So, I went back to ‘school,’ this time taking numerous acting courses to hone my skills.”
After graduating from university, Phuong Thanh left fine arts behind to focus on her acting career.
Her radiant, innocent beauty has earned her the title of the new “muse” of Vietnamese cinema.
With her early exposure to the arts, Phuong Thanh has developed an impressive aesthetic sense. Her delicate features and harmonious visage give her a captivating, innocent beauty that draws people in from the first glance. This unique, poetic charm played a significant role in her being cast as Lan, as she perfectly embodied the director Tran Trong Dan’s vision for the character.
Phuong Thanh’s journey to landing the role was not without challenges. She had to go through seven rounds of auditions, competing against over a hundred potential candidates before finally being chosen.
Phuong Thanh went through seven rounds of auditions for “Ut Lan: Oan Linh Giu Cua” and thought she would be eliminated.
“‘Ut Lan: Oan Linh Giu Cua’ was the longest and most challenging audition process I’ve experienced in my career so far,” she recounted. “I had to go through seven rounds of casting, each requiring me to perform a different scene. I felt relaxed and pressure-free in the initial rounds, but as I progressed, the tension built. Director Tran Trong Dan’s feedback was very frank and detailed, to the point where I almost lost confidence and thought I’d be eliminated. So, when I received the call that I’d been cast as Lan, I could hardly believe it.”
Phuong Thanh felt a mix of excitement, anxiety, and anticipation about her first feature film. One significant reason for these emotions was her family. Initially, they did not support her acting pursuits, but eventually, they became her solid support system, giving her the confidence to pursue her chosen path.
“For me, ‘Ut Lan: Oan Linh Giu Cua’ is not just an important milestone in my career but also a way to express my gratitude to my family for their unwavering support,” she shared. “They are like the wings that carry me toward my seemingly distant dream. I can’t wait for the moment when we all go to the cinema together to watch the film, seeing their little girl, Phuong Thanh, taking a step forward in her journey.”
With her cinematic looks, Phuong Thanh was the perfect choice for the role of Lan, who is “soft on the outside but strong on the inside.”
‘Ut Lan: Oan Linh Giu Cua’ draws inspiration from the folk concept of the “treasure-guarding ghost.” In Vietnamese folklore, a “treasure-guarding ghost” is the spirit of someone who died prematurely or without revealing the location of their hidden treasure, typically gold or jewels. These spirits are believed to guard their earthly possessions jealously, inflicting misfortune, illness, or supernatural harm on anyone who dares to trespass.
For the second time, director and screenwriter Tran Trong Dan explores Vietnamese folk beliefs, which he believes add depth to his scripts and evoke a uniquely Vietnamese brand of horror that blurs the line between the spiritual and the real.
‘Ut Lan: Oan Linh Giu Cua’ is set to release on June 20, adding a distinctive horror flavor to this summer’s movie lineup.
