Lychee is one of the most delicious fruits commonly cultivated in many regions of Vietnam. The harvest season for lychee typically falls between May and July, and the fruit is usually sold at a price ranging from 30,000 to 50,000 VND per kilogram. However, certain rare varieties of lychee are always sold at a premium and are highly sought after when in season due to their limited cultivation.
1. What is White Egg Lychee?
White Egg Lychee is an early-harvest variety
Topping the list of expensive and rarely cultivated lychees is the White Egg Lychee. Even in Hai Duong, many locals have not had the opportunity to indulge in this specialty. White Egg Lychee is grown and harvested earliest in the lychee capital of Thanh Ha district in Hai Duong province, resulting in a higher price that ranges from 70,000 to 90,000 VND per kilo at the farm.
White Egg Lychee commands a higher price compared to other varieties due to its limited cultivation and the tree’s demanding care requirements. This type of lychee is an early-maturing variety, heavily dependent on weather conditions. A lack of rain or excessively cold weather can significantly reduce the fruit-bearing rate. White Egg Lychee boasts the largest size among current lychee varieties. Coupled with its rarity during the season, this variety often attracts customers from all over, who flock to Thanh Ha to purchase it as a gift, resulting in high demand that often outstrips the supply from local gardens.

2. What is Hong (Pink) Lychee?
Hong Lychee from Phu Cu, Hung Yen
Hong Lychee from Phu Cu, Hung Yen province, is one of the most sought-after and expensive lychee varieties in Vietnam. In clean food stores in Hanoi, each kilo of Hong Lychee is sold at a price ranging from 185,000 to 190,000 VND. This variety boasts a larger size than a chicken egg, an intense sweetness, thick flesh, and no worm damage at the tip. Customers often purchase this lychee as a gift at the beginning of the season because, as soon as it is harvested, it sells out quickly. Its exceptional sweetness makes it highly sought-after.

3. Seedless Lychee from Bac Giang
Seedless Lychee from Bac Giang
Seedless Lychee from Bac Giang is the result of four years of grafting and care by Mr. Vi Van Hieu in Luc Ngan, Bac Giang, who has nearly 20 years of experience in cultivating and caring for lychee trees. During the 2022 lychee season, he successfully introduced seedless lychee to the market, featuring large fruits with beautiful colors, thick flesh, and a distinctive sweetness. After its introduction, the seedless lychee from Bac Giang quickly sold out, with a selling price of about 100,000 VND per kilo, thanks to its widespread popularity among customers.
