Storing Basil in the Refrigerator

After washing and drying the basil leaves, place them on a paper towel and roll it up. Put this paper towel roll into a Ziploc bag and then store it in the refrigerator’s crisper drawer.

This method helps keep basil fresh for about 5 days without losing its distinctive flavor.

Freezing Basil with Oil

To freeze, wash the basil leaves, dry them, and then chop them finely. Place these leaves in an ice cube tray, add olive oil to each compartment, and then put the tray in the freezer.

When needed, simply pop out a basil oil cube and use it. This method not only preserves the distinctive flavor of basil but also allows it to be stored for up to 6 months.

Vase Storage for Basil

Cut basil stems to a length of about 8-12 cm. Then, place them in a clean glass of water and position it in a sunny spot, such as a windowsill. Remember to change the water daily to ensure the herb stays fresh.

The ideal temperature for basil is between 24-32°C. During storage, trim any yellowing leaves. After about a week, you will notice roots starting to grow from the basil stems, aiding in its continued growth. With this method, you can keep basil fresh for about 3 weeks.

Planting Basil in Soil

From the water-soaking method, once the basil roots have grown to a good length, you can transfer them to a pot of soil. If growing indoors, ensure the pot is placed in a sunny spot. If growing outdoors, space the plants about 30 cm apart for optimal growth.

Don’t forget to water daily and maintain a warm environment. With this method, basil not only stays fresh for an extended period but also continues to grow, providing a long-term supply of this aromatic herb.

Drying Basil

Wash the basil leaves, dry them, and spread them out on a baking tray. Place the tray in an oven preheated to 77°C for about 45 minutes or until the leaves become crisp.

Once the basil leaves have cooled, you can store them in a Ziploc bag. Dried basil leaves can be used directly or ground for cooking. With this method, basil can retain its flavor for 1-2 years, making it ideal for dishes such as pasta, porridge, or instant noodles.

We hope that with these storage methods, you will always have fresh and flavorful basil on hand.
