A recent study by American scientists has revealed that preterm infants had significantly higher levels of microplastics and nanoplastics accumulated in their placentas compared to full-term infants.

This is not the first time microplastics have been found in placentas. In 2020, Italian scientists also detected microplastics in the placentas of four healthy women. They warned that “microplastics carry endocrine disruptors, which can have long-term effects on human health.”

This study once again raises alarms about the harmful effects of microplastics on human health, especially for pregnant women and their fetuses.

Pregnant women exposed to microplastic particles may experience complications such as pre-eclampsia, preterm birth, and low birth weight infants. Microplastics can also cross the placental barrier and come into direct contact with the fetus, negatively impacting fetal development, particularly the nervous and immune systems.

Additionally, microplastics can cause disruptions in the endocrine system, affecting hormone production and the function of reproductive organs. This can lead to issues such as reduced sperm quality, menstrual irregularities, and difficulty conceiving.
