Preparation
Before cleaning the refrigerator, gather the following items:
- A broom for sweeping
- A garbage bag
- A soft sponge
- Dish soap solution
- Windshield washer fluid
- An old toothbrush
- Baking soda
- Toilet paper
- An absorbent cloth or old terry towel
- Vinegar
Proceed with the cleanup as follows:
In the first two minutes: Sweep away dirt.
Unplug the refrigerator, then use a broom to remove any dirt and dust. This will not only keep your floors clean but also reduce energy waste. Follow up with a mop if desired.
From 3rd to 7th minute: Empty the refrigerator.
Take everything out of the fridge and sort the items based on expiration dates. Discard any expired or spoiled food. Consider reusing glass or plastic containers for other food items.
Minutes 8 to 10: Disassemble and clean drawers.
Remove the freezer compartments and any removable parts. Clean them using a soft sponge, soap, and warm water. Let them dry before putting them back.
Next 5 minutes: Clean non-removable parts and cabinet interior.
Use a mild cleaning solution (detergent, white vinegar solution, or warm water) and a soft cloth to clean the interior of the cabinet. Pay attention to slots, shelves, and crevices. Dry with a paper towel.
Minutes 16 to 18: Put the food back in the cupboard.
Reassemble the drawers and put them back in the refrigerator. Organize the food items and wipe the bottles and jars before placing them back. Consider using a box of baking soda to keep the refrigerator smelling fresh.
Last two minutes: Clean cabinet surfaces.
- For refrigerators with enameled steel surfaces, use glass cleaner and paper towels to clean the door and handle. Stubborn stains can be treated with an all-purpose cleaner.
- For stainless steel refrigerators, dampen a cloth with vinegar and clean the cabinet.
