Many people might think that the best way to cool down a room quickly is to turn on the air conditioner first, and then close all the windows and doors to prevent cold air from escaping. While this may seem like a logical approach, it is not the most effective method.

I used to think the same until recently when an AC technician came to service my unit. That’s when I realized my mistake.

In fact, it is not advisable to turn on the air conditioner and then close all the doors and windows. The reason for this is that air conditioners can be a breeding ground for bacteria, dust mites, mold, and viruses due to the build-up of dust over time.

When the AC is turned on, the blowing air can spread these bacteria and dust particles into the room. If the doors and windows are closed, these contaminants will circulate within the confined space and may enter our respiratory system, potentially causing health issues.

However, leaving the doors and windows open is not the solution either. This will result in the room taking longer to cool down to the desired temperature, leading to higher energy consumption and discomfort. It will also put additional strain on the AC unit, reducing its lifespan.

The correct approach is to first turn on the air conditioner and wait for about 10 minutes before closing the windows and doors. This allows some of the dust and bacteria inside the AC unit to escape, preventing them from circulating in the enclosed space.

After 10 minutes, when the air has stabilized, close the windows and doors to maintain the cool temperature and save energy. This simple step can significantly improve the air quality in your home.

Additionally, when using an air conditioner regularly, keep the following tips in mind to enhance cooling efficiency, prolong the lifespan of the unit, and maintain a healthy environment:

– Avoid frequently turning the AC on and off as it increases energy consumption and reduces the unit’s lifespan.

– Regularly clean the air conditioner, including the air filter, fan, evaporator, and condenser coils, to improve cooling performance and reduce health risks.

– Turn off the AC about 30 minutes before leaving the house to make the most of the remaining cool air in the room.

– During the night, use the sleep mode or set a timer to turn off the AC after a certain period. This saves energy and ensures a comfortable sleep.
