Once upon a time, on Mount Ba Vi, there lived a fierce tiger. Whenever he caught another animal, he would toy with his prey, terrifying them before devouring them. One day, as the Tiger was wandering in search of food, he spotted a tiny tortoise.

The Tiger pounced, leaping towards the tortoise, and taunted it, saying in a deep, mocking voice: “Little tortoise, your body is but half the size of my paw, and your shell is so heavy. Let me peel it off for you!”

The tortoise was terrified to encounter the tiger, but when it realized the tiger wasn’t going to eat it, it calmly devised a plan to trick the tiger. The tortoise replied, “Mr. Tiger, although I am small, I can catch and eat larger animals than myself.”

The tiger, intrigued and skeptical, asked, “Now, don’t tell tales. If you’ve eaten anything bigger than yourself, you must have proof!”

The tortoise then spat out a piece of wood ear mushroom that it had been eating and said to the tiger, “Look, this is the liver of an elephant I ate this morning. When I catch an animal, I only eat its liver, unlike you, who devours flesh and bones.”

The tiger, who had never seen a wood ear mushroom before, mistook it for an elephant’s liver. Frightened by the thought of the tortoise eating elephant livers, the tiger turned tail and ran away.

The tiger ran until he reached a stream, where he stopped to drink. A crab crawled out from somewhere nearby and approached the tiger. The tiger turned to stomp on the crab with his paw, but he decided to taunt the crab first. He said to the crab, “Old crab, you have eight legs, and I have only four. Let’s have a race, and whoever loses shall be eaten. Do you accept the challenge?”

The crab, quick-witted, immediately thought of a way to race the tiger. It nodded in agreement. The race began, and each time the tiger leaped forward, the crab would clamp its claws onto the tiger’s tail. The tiger jumped and jumped, but with each leap, the crab was pulled forward, getting closer to the finish line. The tiger jumped tirelessly but couldn’t seem to outjump the crab. Finally, exhausted, the tiger called out, “Old crab, let’s take a break!”

The crab, having outsmarted the tiger, laughed out loud. The tiger, remembering the terms of the challenge, took advantage of the crab’s laughter and ran away as fast as he could, not daring to look back.
