Recounting the journey of building their dream home, Mrs. Huyen shared: At the beginning of 2023, my husband longed for a nature-embraced sanctuary, serving as both our residence and a welcoming space for visiting friends and travelers. The pandemic also spurred us to rethink our lifestyle, prompting a move from Son La to Moc Chau to materialize our vision. After some exploration, we acquired a plot amidst lush tea gardens and commenced construction in June 2024. However, due to Moc Chau’s prolonged rainy seasons and frigid winters, it took almost a year to complete our home.
Spanning approximately 120 square meters, their sanctuary boasts four bedrooms, a combined kitchen and living room, and a communal space. We embraced a Rustic style, infused with Cottage and subtle vintage touches. Nature-inspired, we prioritized harmony, emotion, and coziness over sheer aesthetics. Each piece of furniture was meticulously chosen, handcrafted, or meticulously restored from vintage finds. Our aim was to evoke a sense of homecoming for our guests, transcending the typical host-guest dynamic. Wood, warm tones, and natural elements dominate the interior, exuding simplicity and authenticity.

My husband played a pivotal role in crafting and restoring much of the furniture, infusing each piece with his creativity and emotion. This house is truly a labor of love and unwavering perseverance.
The total cost of constructing this sanctuary amounted to nearly 2 billion VND, a substantial investment for a young family. The couple’s prudent lifestyle and clear financial planning made this achievement possible, augmented by the unwavering support of their families, both financially and emotionally.
The journey of constructing this sanctuary was fraught with challenges, from inclement weather conditions to finding skilled local artisans who could grasp their modern design vision. Mrs. Huyen, a young mother in her 90s, elaborated: Most local artisans were unfamiliar with contemporary designs, requiring my husband to provide meticulous guidance. Despite his efforts, fully conveying our initial concept proved challenging. Even seemingly simple elements were difficult to execute due to limited suitable materials and construction constraints.
My husband bore the brunt of the pressure and hardships. He oversaw every aspect, from space design and material selection to construction supervision and hands-on craftsmanship when workers were unavailable. On rainy, foggy days, he would tirelessly work on the veranda, meticulously fitting wood panels and laying bricks to ensure perfection. To me, these ‘imperfections’ infuse the house with authenticity and soul.
For Mrs. Huyen, the most gratifying aspect of their home is how it embodies their family’s determined journey and purposeful lifestyle. It is more than just a dwelling; it encapsulates their values of simplicity, connection, and providing a wholesome environment for their daughter to flourish.
I believe a true sanctuary is where one finds peace and can be their authentic self. It’s that sense of ‘belonging’ when you step through the door. A small courtyard overlooking the tea hills, where we sip tea, read, play, and witness sunrises and sunsets; a cozy kitchen that always smells of delicious home-cooked meals and family dinners. Above all, it’s the sense of tranquility we’ve discovered here, something we never found in the bustling town we once called home.
