Mr. Le Minh Quoc, a 34-year-old executive director from Ca Mau, decided to bring a piece of his hometown into his urban life by creating a rooftop garden, which is a sight for sore eyes.
Mr. Quoc’s family
“I enjoy gardening and wanted to provide my family, especially my three children, with fresh produce, so I created this rooftop garden in March 2024. It spans an area of 90 square meters within a nearly 1,000-square-meter house, and it cost me about 80 million VND to build. Here, I grow various fruits such as watermelons, honeydew melons, bitter gourds, and cucumbers, along with vegetables like water spinach and broccoli, and fruits including plums, guavas, and lemons. In addition, I also take care of a garden of foreign roses downstairs,” shared Mr. Quoc.
The director shared that gardening is not an easy task. From carrying soil and organic fertilizer to the rooftop to controlling spider mites, leaf and root fungi, and creating a well-aerated and nutritious soil mix, he faces challenges daily. Apart from the beautiful harvests, there are also times when Mr. Quoc feels discouraged when plants die or fall prey to pests.
However, these difficulties motivate him to continuously learn from fellow gardeners. “Since the early days of building my garden, I’ve learned from fellow gardeners to choose a suitable model that ensures aesthetics and technical aspects, such as plastic-joined pots and drip irrigation systems to prevent plant death during the dry season.
Through my gardening journey, I’ve gained valuable insights, such as thoroughly mixing and incubating the soil to eliminate pathogens, adding trichoderma to increase beneficial microorganisms, choosing seasonal seeds with clear origins to avoid replanting due to diseases or poor fruit quality, and regularly spraying pesticides and fungicides every 7-10 days. A drip irrigation system is also essential to ensure the plants don’t dry out if I’m unable to water them myself,” Mr. Quoc explained.
With a spacious and sunny garden, Mr. Quoc realized that the 90-square-meter area might be a bit small for his passion. Therefore, he plans to develop another 500-square-meter garden downstairs to expand his gardening endeavors. The director shared, “In the heart of Saigon, where urbanization and pollution prevail, the moments I spend pruning, fertilizing, and watering my garden help me balance my energy so I can work and take care of my children effectively.”
