One way to get rid of this odor is to buy air freshener blocks and place them in the bathroom. However, not everyone can find a scent they like, and some people even get headaches and dizziness from the strong chemical fragrances.

Actually, you don’t need those fresheners; try these natural alternatives to freshen up your bathroom instead.

1. Use coffee grounds

If you’re a fan of Vietnamese-style drip coffee or know someone who is, you can reuse the coffee grounds to neutralize unpleasant bathroom odors.

Place about two cups of used coffee grounds in a corner of the bathroom, or put them in a cloth bag and hang it high so that the coffee aroma permeates the room and overpowers any bad smells.

Besides the bathroom, coffee grounds can also be used to absorb odors from your refrigerator, as an exfoliant, or even as a fertilizer for your plants.

2. Use tobacco bits

Tobacco is surprisingly effective at eliminating bathroom odors. Mix some tobacco bits with laundry detergent or soap flakes, and add some white vinegar. Stir the mixture well.

Pour the mixture into a disposable cup and place it in a corner of the bathroom. The vinegar will not only disinfect but also accelerate the evaporation of the tobacco and soap, quickly getting rid of any unpleasant smells.

3. Use essential oils

Simply leave a bottle of your favorite essential oil open in the bathroom, and the pleasant aroma will quickly overpower any bad smells.

4. Use lemongrass

Lemongrass is well-known for its ability to repel insects and neutralize odors. Hang some lemongrass stalks in your bathroom to get rid of unpleasant smells and drive away those annoying little bugs.

For better results, crush the lemongrass stalks slightly to release more of their natural fragrance. The pleasant, subtle aroma will not only eliminate odors but also create a relaxing atmosphere for anyone who enters.

5. Use pandan leaves

Just like lemongrass, pandan leaves can be hung or placed in a corner of the bathroom to absorb moisture and unpleasant smells.

6. Use strong liquor

Place a few shot glasses of strong liquor, such as vodka or rum, in a corner of the bathroom. The alcohol will evaporate, taking the bad smells with it and leaving a fresh scent that can last for about a week.

7. Use lemons

Lemons are great for neutralizing odors and killing bacteria. Squeeze the juice from three to four lemons into the toilet bowl, then close the lid. Also, pour lemon juice into the corners of the bathroom and close the door.

Wait for about an hour, then flush the toilet and clean the bathroom as usual. By then, the fresh, citrusy scent of lemons should permeate the room. Alternatively, you can use white vinegar instead of lemon juice, which works just as well.
