To quickly cool down and save energy, perform these two steps before turning on your air conditioner.

1. Open the windows for ventilation

Before leaving for work, many households have the habit of closing their doors and windows to prevent break-ins. Additionally, keeping the windows closed when you’re out helps to keep out dust, wind, or rain, as summer weather can be unpredictable.

However, during the hot summer months, furniture and floors absorb heat throughout the day, significantly increasing the indoor temperature.

To address this, it is crucial to dissipate the heat before turning on the air conditioner. Open the windows to allow airflow and help cool the room. You can also turn on a fan to quickly dispel the indoor heat.

By cooling the room before using the air conditioner, you can achieve a rapid temperature drop while reducing electricity consumption during the operation of the air conditioner—a win-win situation with half the effort.

2. Regularly clean your air conditioner

At the beginning of summer, it is essential to thoroughly clean your air conditioner, both inside and out, before turning it on. This helps prevent dust buildup, which can impact the efficiency of the unit and the quality of the indoor air.

According to experts, cleaning the air conditioner’s dust filter every 2–3 weeks can save approximately 0.47 kilowatts of electricity per day and up to 10% of annual energy consumption. However, if you live in an area with less dust, cleaning the filter every 2–3 months should suffice.

Cleaning the air conditioner’s filter is simple. First, turn off the power to the unit. Next, open the front panel of the indoor unit by pushing the joints at the bottom corners and carefully removing the dust filter layers from the outside in.

You can use a handheld vacuum cleaner to suck out the dust and dirt from the outside, making it easier to clean the filter. Then, use a spray nozzle to directly spray and remove the dust from the filter.

Subsequently, use a sponge and soap to gently clean the filter. Be careful not to scrub too hard or use hot water, as this can damage, tear, or deform the filter.

After rinsing, dry the filter in front of a fan and wipe it with a dry cloth before reinstalling it in the air conditioner. Cleaning the air conditioner filter is a straightforward process that you can easily do yourself.

Regarding the temperature setting, it is recommended to set the air conditioner to 26–28 degrees Celsius. Using a combination of the air conditioner and an electric fan can circulate the air, resulting in faster cooling and reduced electricity consumption.
