1. Freeze Your Shoes
However, bacteria and fungi can continue to thrive and multiply if your shoes are still damp. So, make sure your shoes are completely dry before wearing them and store them in a well-ventilated area.
2. Egg Shells to the Rescue
Egg shells contain calcium carbonate, a mineral with alkaline properties and the ability to absorb odors.
Simply wash and thoroughly dry some egg shells. Place the cleaned shells in your shoes and leave them there for about a day. If the odor persists, you can extend the time. Just be careful not to crush the shells inside the shoes.
3. Sugarcane Bagasse Power
Sugarcane bagasse has excellent odor-absorbing properties and can effectively eliminate shoe odor. Additionally, its antibacterial and disinfecting qualities help inhibit bacterial growth.
Place dried bagasse in a cloth bag and leave it in your shoes overnight. In the morning, remove the bag and gently tap it to get rid of the bagasse and any absorbed odors. If needed, repeat this process weekly to maintain fresh-smelling shoes.
4. Potato Starch to the Rescue
Potato starch is a powerhouse when it comes to absorbing odors. When applied to shoes, it effectively eliminates unpleasant smells.
To use this method, take an adequate amount of potato starch, place it in a cloth bag, and put it inside your shoes. You can repeat this process every one to two weeks to ensure your shoes remain clean and odor-free.
5. Apple Cider Vinegar: A Natural Deodorizer
Apple cider vinegar’s acidity and alcohol content make it a powerful disinfectant that can eliminate odor-causing bacteria from your shoes.
Dilute the vinegar with an equal amount of water and either spray it directly onto the insides of your shoes or onto their outer surfaces. As the vinegar evaporates, it will carry away the unpleasant odors and disinfect your shoes.
