I used to think that hotels were completely safe, but I later learned that there are some places in the room that deserve extra attention.
I recently spoke to a hotel housekeeper who shared a valuable tip: “When checking into a hotel room, don’t go to sleep right away. Make sure to check these four spots first.”
I’m sharing this information so that others can be aware and take precautions when staying in a hotel. Don’t take your safety for granted!
1. Anywhere with an electrical outlet
Before inserting your key card into the slot, take a moment to inspect the room for any hidden cameras. This is especially important in homestays, small hotels, and inns. Check all electrical outlets, including light switches, power sockets, TVs, air conditioners, and phones. If you find any infrared rays or unfamiliar devices, contact the front desk or the police immediately.
2. Mirrors
In addition to checking electrical devices, inspect the mirrors in the bathroom. There are two types of mirrors: one-way and two-way. A one-way mirror is the standard type found in homes, where you can only see through from one side. However, some hotels use two-way mirrors, which allow someone on the other side to see you, but you can’t see them.
To test a mirror, simply touch the tip of your finger to its surface. If there is a slight gap between your finger and its reflection, the mirror is safe. If there is no gap, it could be a two-way mirror, which poses a privacy risk.
3. Showerhead
Pay attention to the showerhead as well. If it’s detachable, unscrew it and check the inside of the pipe for any dirt or residue. Some people have reported finding traces of misuse, which is unhygienic and unacceptable. If you find any signs of tampering, notify the hotel management immediately and request a room change. Consider carrying your own showerhead and hose if you’re particularly concerned about this issue.
4. Door Locks
Your safety is paramount when staying in a hotel, yet many people overlook checking the door locks. Hotel door locks may not be as secure as we think. I once stayed in a hotel where the door could be opened from the outside without a key card—a frightening realization. If you encounter any issues with the door lock, inform the front desk immediately and request a room change.
Additionally, it’s a good idea to engage the safety latch from the inside and place a cup on the door handle. If someone tries to enter from the outside, the cup will fall and make a noise, alerting you to potential intruders.
