The Whale, known as Cau Ong, has saved fishermen from dangers at sea multiple times, making the worship of Cau Ong an integral part of the spiritual and cultural life of these fishermen.
The Whale, also known as the God of the Southern Sea, is a gray whale considered as the auspicious deity of the ocean. It is believed to be the incarnation of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva. The whale symbolizes Ong Nam Hai, always ready to rescue and protect fishermen at sea during difficulties caused by storms, big waves, and strong winds.
When a whale dies and washes ashore, the villagers collect its bones and worship it. From then on, the worship of Cau Ong has become a distinctive feature of the religious culture in Vietnam.
