Why More People Are Choosing Integrated Cooktops Over Range Hoods

Reasons Why Integrated Cooktops Are Gaining Popularity Over Range Hoods

1. Space-saving design

One of the biggest advantages of integrated cooktops is their efficient use of space. Traditionally, range hoods were installed in wall cabinets, while cooktops and larger kitchen appliances were placed in base cabinets.

With integrated cooktops, however, only one base cabinet is needed. Additionally, many models feature an extra shelf above the cooktop, providing convenient storage space. This design frees up counter space, allowing bottles and jars (especially spices) to be neatly organized on the shelf above the cooktop. There’s no need for unsightly wall-mounted shelves, resulting in a sleek and clutter-free kitchen.

2. Superior odor elimination

The main issue with traditional range hoods is their inability to completely eliminate odors, despite modern advancements. Grease and oil tend to escape, even with the most powerful hoods.

While integrated cooktops don’t capture 100% of grease, they are far more effective. Hot grease rises, so having the hood above the cooktop makes sense. However, as the grease cools, it descends, and traditional range hoods that only extract from above become less efficient.

Integrated cooktops, on the other hand, extract horizontally and expel downwards, following the natural movement of smoke and grease. Despite having smaller specifications than range hoods, their odor elimination capabilities are impressive. This makes them the preferred choice for open-plan kitchens.

3. Smart connectivity

Integrated cooktops, regardless of brand or model, offer smart connectivity between the cooktop and the range hood. For example, turning on the cooktop automatically activates the range hood, and reducing the flame adjusts the fan speed accordingly.

This feature is not only convenient but also hygienic, as it eliminates the need to touch the range hood while cooking (hands are usually dirty). It also avoids the need to clean the control buttons frequently.

Drawbacks of Integrated Cooktops

1. Complex installation process

Replacing a range hood with an integrated cooktop requires the complete removal of the existing hood and ductwork, as well as modifications to the wall cabinets. The base cabinets also need to be altered to accommodate the new cooktop, and additional holes may need to be drilled in the building’s common exhaust pipe to allow for separate exhaust pipes for the cooktop.

A friend of mine who lives on the first floor wanted to install an integrated cooktop, but the technician said it wasn’t possible due to the common exhaust pipe being filled with construction debris, blocking the airflow.

In summary, integrated cooktops are best installed during a kitchen renovation. Retrofitting an existing kitchen with integrated cooktops can be complicated and costly.

2. Underutilized features

Integrated cooktops often come with additional built-in appliances, such as expensive ovens or steamers, which increase the overall cost significantly.

However, many users find these extra features unnecessary. Ovens and steamers can be inconvenient to use and clean, and unless you’re an avid chef, they may go unused. Other “fancy” features, like voice control, can also be impractical due to the noise of the range hood, requiring you to shout commands, which can be tiresome.

3. Higher cost

Integrated cooktops tend to be more expensive than traditional cooktops and range hoods, even for basic models. Repair costs can also be higher, as replacement parts tend to be pricier than those for standard range hoods and cooktops.
