For those in the know about air conditioners, it is common knowledge that these cooling units are categorized into five energy-efficiency ratings. Interestingly, the higher the energy consumption, the more affordable the air conditioner tends to be.

I used to think that buying an air conditioner was simple, but after consulting at an appliance center, I realized that the plethora of brands and types available left me bewildered and unsure of what to choose.

I initially considered purchasing a basic air conditioner, but my friends advised against it. Upon consulting experts, I learned that the following five types of air conditioners are no longer installed due to various drawbacks:

1. Energy-guzzling air conditioners

Anyone who has purchased an air conditioner knows that energy consumption is categorized into five levels. The higher the energy consumption, the cheaper the unit tends to be. Many people, aiming to save on initial costs, opt for air conditioners with maximum energy consumption. However, they soon realize that these units can rack up electricity bills, sometimes reaching several hundred thousand dong or even millions of dong per month.

In contrast, energy-efficient air conditioners (level 2 and above) consume only about two-thirds or less electricity. This comparison clearly highlights the more cost-effective option.

2. Basic air conditioners

A decade ago, basic air conditioners were commonplace. However, with technological advancements, inverter air conditioners have gained popularity. Basic air conditioners consume more energy and can significantly increase electricity bills. They also produce loud noises, disrupt sleep, and offer imprecise temperature control, leading to discomfort.

3. Air conditioners using R32 gas

Cooling gas is a critical component in air conditioners. The market primarily offers two types of gas: R32 and R410a. Compared to R410a, R32 is more environmentally friendly, less expensive to produce, and offers higher cooling efficiency.

However, R32 has a significant drawback: it is highly flammable and explosive, posing potential risks in case of accidents. Therefore, when choosing an air conditioner, it is advisable to opt for units that do not use R32 gas.

4. Air conditioners from unknown or untrusted brands

Some people, aiming to save money, opt for air conditioners from unknown brands at low prices. However, the old adage “you get what you pay for” rings true. These unbranded air conditioners often provide poor cooling performance, produce loud noises, and are prone to malfunctions. While people may think that warranty coverage will take care of repairs, these unknown brands often lack proper after-sales service, and finding a technician to fix them can be challenging.

5. Ceiling-mounted air conditioners (ducted type)

Ceiling-mounted air conditioners are favored by those who appreciate a modern aesthetic as they are concealed within the ceiling, complementing various interior styles and elevating the space. Nevertheless, they come with significant drawbacks. For instance, they can be noisy, disrupting sleep, and their maintenance and cleaning are more complicated compared to conventional wall-mounted units.

After reading this, you now have a clearer understanding of choosing an air conditioner. While these five types are less favored, they are still available in the market. Therefore, it is essential to be cautious, do your research, and make an informed decision to avoid purchasing an air conditioner that does not meet your needs.
