The south has long been considered the direction of royalty, and thus, in ancient times, it was deemed an auspicious direction in feng shui. However, the imperial city of Hue, founded by Emperor Gia Long, faces southeast.

The name Vietnam was officially established as the country's name for the first time in 1804. Prior to this, in 1803, Emperor Gia Long intended to request the Qing Dynasty to name the country Nam Viet, but this was rejected due to potential confusion with the ancient kingdom of Nam Viet ruled by Trieu Da.

From the time of King Minh Mang onwards, the succeeding kings have refrained from crowning their wives as the Queen during their reigns. The reason behind this decision remains a mystery.
