1. Potatoes
The cold temperature in the refrigerator affects the taste of potatoes, and this applies to all types of potatoes: yellow potatoes, purple potatoes, sweet potatoes… You should store potatoes in a dry, cool place and wrap them in newspaper. Avoid storing potatoes in plastic bags as they trap moisture, which can cause them to sprout.
2. Bread
Bread will become stale quickly if stored in the refrigerator. You can keep bread in newspaper at room temperature for up to 4 days. If you have extra bread, you can store it in the freezer compartment of the refrigerator. When you need to eat it, thaw it and the bread will still be soft and fresh, not dry.
3. Spicy sauces
This includes Tabasco sauce, as well as soy sauce and Worcestershire sauce. You can store these sauces in the pantry for up to 3 years without worrying about them going bad.
4. Onions, dried onions
Onions should be stored in mesh bags from the store to ensure air circulation and keep them dry. Avoid storing onions near potatoes, as potatoes cause onions to sprout.
5. Tomatoes
The refrigerator “kills” the taste of tomatoes. If you want tomatoes to ripen quickly, you should wrap them in newspaper. Avoid using plastic bags as they can make the tomatoes mushy!
6. Avocados
If the avocado is not fully ripe, you should leave it outside until it is fully ripe before refrigerating it. Refrigerating avocados will extend their freshness for about 1 more week. Keep the avocado whole and uncut, as the surface of the cut avocado exposed to air can make it taste bitter.
7. Coffee
You may find it surprising, but you should absolutely not store coffee in the refrigerator or even the freezer compartment of the refrigerator, as this will alter the taste of the coffee. Store coffee in airtight containers and keep them in your kitchen pantry!
8. Garlic
Garlic can be stored in a cool, dry place for about 2 months. Storing garlic in the refrigerator can cause it to lose flavor and sprout faster, so this is one of the things you should not store in the refrigerator. When you notice the cloves at the top of the garlic head starting to split, it’s best to use it within 10 days.
9. Honey
Storing honey in the refrigerator will cause it to quickly solidify and can form hard crystallized clumps in the jar. You can completely store honey in the kitchen pantry without worrying about it spoiling for a very long time!
10. Squash
No need to refrigerate squash, they can retain their freshness when stored in a cool place for about 1 month.
11. Melons
For whole melons, you should keep them at room temperature to ensure the best taste. Once cut, you should only refrigerate melons for about 3-4 days!
12. Oils
Most oils will solidify and become cloudy when stored in the refrigerator, except for almond oil. The rest of the oils should be stored in the kitchen pantry to ensure the best quality and taste.
