1. Place ice cubes in the dryer to remove wrinkles
Put a few ice cubes in the washing machine on a normal wash cycle for about 15 minutes. The ice cubes will melt and turn into steam, helping to remove wrinkles from your clothes. You can also use a handy trick by placing a damp sock in the dryer with the wrinkled clothes, which will have a similar effect.
2. Remove lint from clothes with a razor
After washing your clothes, take your razor and clean the lint from your clothes. Use a lint roller, fabric shaver to remove any fabric debris from your clothes.
3. Use steam to flatten hats
Take a small pan and boil water in it. Keep the heat low and place the hat you want to flatten on top of the pan. The steam will gradually straighten out the creases and help the hat regain its shape.
4. Restore faded clothes with salt
Add 1/2 cup of salt (about 150 grams) to the wash cycle. Specifically, when you have loaded the clothes and detergent into the washing machine, pour this portion of salt in as well. Besides restoring color, it can also help prevent new clothes from fading.
You can also use salt for every wash if desired. Regular table salt or super fine sea salt is best for this task, but avoid coarse sea salt as it may not fully dissolve in the washing machine.
Salt is also an effective stain remover, especially for blood, mildew, and sweat stains.
5. Use fabric dyes for white clothes to restore their original white color
Household bleach (sodium hypochlorite) is commonly used as a whitening agent in laundry. However, using too much can have a counterproductive effect. It can also make white clothes turn yellowish.
Instead, you should use them with colored clothes. Like blue, gray to help these clothes look bright and new again.
6. Unbutton your clothes before washing them
Take a little extra time before you throw everything into the washing machine and hinder its operation. Check to make sure you have completely removed all buttons from your clothes. This helps prevent the buttons on your clothes from catching on other types of clothes, and they won’t get pulled or loosened. Otherwise, your clothes risk getting stuck, pulled, or the fabric torn, damaging the locking mechanism and buttonholes while washing.
7. Use dental floss to secure buttons
If you want to prevent your buttons from falling off, simply sew them on with dental floss. It’s a handy trick, especially for heavily worn buttons.
8. Use a hair straightener to flatten collars
If even after ironing, your collars still look wrinkled, a hair straightener will fix that. It’s also a handy trick when you’re in a hurry and don’t have time to use an ironing board. Just be careful not to burn the fabric.
