Thomas Corley, author of the book “Rich Habits: The Daily Success Habits of the Wealthy Individuals,” spent 5 years studying the lives of both the rich, individuals with annual incomes of over $160,000 and assets of at least $3.2 million, and the poor, individuals with annual incomes of less than $35,000 and assets of less than $5,000.
He drew conclusions about “rich habits” and “poor habits,” concepts that describe the tendencies of individuals in each group. Corley said that everyone has some rich habits and some poor habits. The key here is that over 50% of your habits should be rich habits.
Here are some of the different habits of the rich and the poor that Thomas Corley deduced from his research.
1. The rich always keep their goals in sight
“I focus on my goals every day.” 62% of the rich agree with this statement, while only 6% of the poor agree with it.
The rich have not only monthly and yearly goals, but 67% of them also write it down on paper.
2. The rich always know what they need to do today
“I have a list of daily tasks to do.” 81% of the rich agree with this statement, while only 19% of the poor agree with it.
The rich not only have a list of tasks to do, but 67% of them also complete at least 70% of the listed tasks every day.
3. The rich don’t watch TV
“I watch TV for an hour or less every day.” 67% of the rich agree with this statement, while only 23% of the poor agree with it.
Only 6% of the rich watch reality TV shows. In contrast, 78% of the poor do this. Corley said, “The common trait among the wealthy is that they use their time effectively. They don’t avoid watching TV because they have more discipline and willpower. They just don’t choose TV because they have other daily habits, such as reading books.”
4. The rich don’t read for pleasure
“I love reading books.” 86% of the rich agree with this statement, while only 26% of the poor agree with it.
The rich enjoy reading books, especially non-fiction books or books that help self-improvement. “The rich devour books that show them how to improve themselves,” says Corley. 88% of the rich read self-improvement books for about 30 minutes every day, but only 2% of the poor do this.
5. The rich also enjoy listening to audiobooks
“I listen to audiobooks when commuting from home to work and vice versa.” 63% of the rich agree with this statement, while only 5% of the poor agree with it.
If you don’t like audiobooks, you can also use your free time when commuting from home to work for other useful activities or self-improvement.
6. The rich are willing to do more than what they are paid for
“I do more than what is required of me.” 81% of the rich agree with this statement, while only 17% of the poor agree with it.
86% of the rich say that, on average, they work 50 hours or more per week, while only 43% of the poor do this. Furthermore, only 6% of the rich say they are not satisfied with their job.
7. The rich don’t rely on winning the lottery
“I play the lottery regularly.” Only 6% of the rich agree with this statement, while 77% of the poor agree with it.
This answer does not mean that the rich gamble their money away safely. Corley explains, “The rich are mostly business owners who put their own money on the table and accept financial risks. They don’t shy away from watching the lottery numbers because they have discipline and willpower. They just don’t choose the lottery because they have other daily habits, such as counting calories.”
8. The rich monitor their weight
“I count the calories I consume every day.” 57% of the rich agree with this statement, while only 5% of the poor agree with it.
The rich value their own health. Corley recounts, “One individual in my rich group is 68 years old and has $78 million in assets. I asked him why he hasn’t retired yet. He replied that he has been working out and monitoring his diet for the past 45 years because he knows that the final stage of his career is the years that he earns the most money. If he can extend his career for another 4-5 years compared to others, he will have an additional $7 million.”
9. The rich take care of their smiles
“I use dental floss every day.” 62% of the rich agree with this statement, while only 16% of the poor agree with it.
