It’s hard to deny the convenience of plastic containers in the kitchen, helping to keep food tidy and organized. However, it’s important to use them safely. Health experts recommend opting for reputable brands that meet safety standards. Additionally, knowing a few tricks can help prolong the lifespan of your plastic containers.
Be Microwave Smart
Even if your container is labeled “microwave-safe,” it’s best not to overdo it. Avoid using plastic containers to boil or cook food. Even if the container doesn’t warp from the heat, odors and colors from the food can still seep into the plastic. It’s fine to reheat food gently, but if you want it hotter, transfer it to a glass or ceramic dish.
Dishwasher Diligence
When using a dishwasher to clean your plastic containers, ensure that the manufacturer recommends it for plastic. Otherwise, the intense heat and pressure may damage or deform your containers.
Prevent Stains from Colorful Foods
You can use a simple trick to prevent colorful foods like tomato sauce from staining your containers. Before adding the food, lightly coat the inside of the container with vegetable oil using a paper towel or spray. This creates a protective barrier between the food and the plastic.
Wash Sooner Rather Than Later
It’s best to wash your containers as soon as possible. Use warm water and dish soap, and if you can’t wash them immediately, wipe out the container with a paper towel and wash it as soon as you can.
Banish Odors with Baking Soda
To eliminate odors from your plastic containers, wash them with warm water and dish soap, then sprinkle with baking soda and let it sit for 5-10 minutes. Follow up by scrubbing with more baking soda and rinsing thoroughly.
Try Newspaper or Charcoal for Stubborn Odors
If your container still has a persistent odor, try filling it with crumpled newspaper or activated charcoal, sealing it shut, and letting it sit for a day or two. The newspaper or charcoal will absorb the odors, after which you can wash the container with dish soap.
Know When to Say Goodbye
If your container becomes deformed, if the lid no longer fits snugly, or if you can’t remove stubborn stains or odors with any method, it’s probably time to replace it with a new one.
