The team at Eat This, Not That! reached out to some of the top trainers and health experts for their advice on lazy ways to get moving that you can start right away.
1. Turn phone calls into walking sessions
Ashlee Van Burskirk, a personal trainer, former athlete, and current owner of the fitness and nutrition company Whole Intent, says, “Walking can be a no-brainer activity, and a conversation gives you something to focus on. This way, you can keep in touch with your friends and family while also getting in some easy exercise, even if you’re just pacing around your apartment.”
2. Stretch while watching TV
Clara Roberts-Oss, a 500-hour Yoga instructor, says, “While stretching won’t burn many calories, it creates more space in the body and mind for encouraging a relaxed state.”
“When we feel comfortable and at ease in our bodies, we’re less likely to stress eat, drink alcohol, or indulge in sweets and processed foods – things that negatively impact our bodies,” says instructor Roberts-Oss, according to Eat This, Not That!
Simply perform a few stretches while watching TV to feel the effects.
3. Keep your exercise equipment in plain sight
Dorian “Gambit” Johnson, a trainer and weight loss coach specifically for weddings, known as The Bridal Architect, says, “A lazy way to get a fit physique is to design your environment to create more movement habits. Have a kettlebell, resistance band, or dumbbell on the floor. Pick up a dumbbell as you pass by.”
While you may not like the clutter, it will serve as a reminder to use your exercise equipment more often.
4. Start stacking habit on habit

Stacking habit on habit is combining small but meaningful changes into your current habits. In fact, this merging can be your new weight-loss ally, according to personal trainer Saara Haapanen.
For example, Haapanen advises, “Do 15 squats after you brush your teeth.”
The key to successful habit stacking is to treat the merged tasks as one. So if you do 15 squats after brushing your teeth, don’t view that as two tasks. It’s simply what you do every time you clean your teeth, merged into one task. Over time, you’ll find that you’ve added hundreds of squats to your day, and you’re burning more calories than before.
And remember: Science has repeatedly proven that forming new habits is vital to maintaining your weight-loss journey.
5. Brush your teeth right after eating
If you tend to overeat – especially in the evenings – Lisa Kiersky Schreiber, a health coach and weight loss author, has a helpful tip that can help you avoid those unwanted calories and better control your decisions. It’s “Brushing your teeth right after dinner.”
This can prevent you from eating hundreds of extra calories because you’ll hesitate to brush again, says Schreiber, according to Eat This, Not That!
