Peaches are one of the most popular stone fruits because of their juicy texture, sweet flavor and unique aroma. There are many varieties of peaches, but the most common one available in the market at this time is the Hairy Peach. This variety is known for its large size, and when you know how to choose them, they can be incredibly crisp and sugary. Here are some tips to keep in mind when shopping for peaches.

1. Go for hairy peaches

Most people wouldn’t know the difference between a male and a female peach. Here’s a neat trick to identify the difference: pay attention to the fuzzy end of the fruit. If it has a pronounced bump, then it is most likely a male peach. These peaches are said to be juicy and sweet due to their high water content. When ripened naturally, they tend to be even sweeter. You can purchase them with confidence.

2. Look at the fuzz

Male peaches have a slightly yellow fuzz. The yellower the fuzz, the sweeter the peach. However, if the peach has an excessive amount of fuzz, that could be a sign of low flavor. The nutrients would have concentrated more on the skin, leaving the flesh with less sweetness.

3. Smell the peach

When a peach ripens naturally, it not only becomes sweeter but also more aromatic. You should be able to detect a distinct, fresh peach fragrance. When choosing a peach, take the time to smell it. If the peach scent is strong, it is an indication that it has ripened naturally without the use of chemicals. These peaches tend to be sweet and delicious.

Also, ripe peaches will have a reddish hue, so avoid picking peaches that are more on the whitish side. They tend to be more tart and lack the desired juiciness and sweetness.

4. Press the peach

Ripe peaches will naturally be somewhat soft to the touch. However, that does not mean that it should give way completely and not bounce back. This could be a sign that it has been sitting out for too long and is past its prime. You’ll want to avoid choosing these.

5. Feel the weight

Out of peaches that are of similar size, choose those that feel heavier and firmer in your hand. A heavier peach is an indication that it is juicier, so make sure to reach for those when you’re out shopping!
