There’s a nifty little button that auto enthusiasts have pointed out on older car models, which many people may not be aware of. This button is said to increase the car’s power output. However, it’s only available on vehicles with automatic transmissions.
The button is labeled ‘ECT’ or ‘ECT Power’ on the car’s interface. When activated, it alters the behavior of the automatic transmission, making the car feel more responsive to the driver.

In simple terms, engaging ECT mode causes the automatic transmission to shift at higher engine speeds (RPM), resulting in a more aggressive and responsive driving experience compared to shifting at lower RPMs.
To check if ECT is activated, drivers can glance at the instrument cluster behind the steering wheel. If the ECT indicator is illuminated, the mode is active. Once engaged, each gear in the automatic transmission will operate at a higher RPM range, causing the shifts to occur later and allowing the engine to produce more power.
However, frequent use of ECT mode can lead to faster wear and tear of the vehicle’s internal components, including the engine, as they are subjected to higher-intensity operations.
Additionally, maintaining higher engine speeds for prolonged periods will result in increased fuel consumption compared to driving in a standard mode.
Older car models produced around 2009-2010, such as the Toyota Camry, Toyota Innova, and Toyota Fortuner, often feature this ECT function. On the other hand, newer vehicles with modern transmission technologies offer multiple driving modes that increase engine RPM before shifting, rendering the ECT feature unnecessary.
