Cá is a nutritious food that is essential in daily meals. It can be cooked into delicious dishes such as stew, fried, soup, grilled, and steamed… among which steaming best preserves its sweet taste. However, no matter how you steam the fish, you need to know how to prepare it properly to avoid the fishy smell. Remember these 3 steps below to eliminate the fishy smell of the fish.
Remove the black membrane
Whether you buy fish at the supermarket or the market, they are usually already gutted. All you need to do is bring them home. However, the black membrane in the fish’s abdomen may not have been cleaned properly, so when you bring the fish home, you need to remove it. This is the reason that makes the fish have a fishy smell.
Marinate the fish
After removing the black membrane in the fish’s abdomen, you should scale and remove the fins on both sides of the fish, then marinate the fish with ginger and alcohol. First, apply alcohol evenly on both sides of the fish, you can also apply it to the fish’s abdomen. Place the slices of ginger on the fish’s abdomen and on the cuts on the fish’s body, marinate for 15 minutes.
Alcohol and ginger have the effect of reducing the fishy smell, making the fish more fragrant and attractive.
Place the fish on a deep plate and prepare to steam.
Remove the boiling water from the fish
Boil water in a steamer pot, put the fish plate on the steamer over high heat for 10 minutes or longer depending on the weight of the fish. The fish will be cooked and tender.
Note: Do not add any spices when steaming the fish, and do not open the lid during the process as steaming will reduce the nutrients of the fish. If you steam the fish with herbs, add the herbs from the beginning.
Usually, when you steam the fish, you will see some water flowing out from the fish. After steaming the fish, you should discard this water because it is the one that makes the fish have a fishy smell when eating.
Therefore, to make your steamed fish not dry and more fragrant, after removing the water that flowed out from the steamed fish, we will replace it with another type of water.
The method is very simple, arrange sliced ginger and finely chopped green onion on the fish. Heat up some cooking oil in a pan, add a little seasoning such as soy sauce if desired, then pour this water onto the fish. At this point, the ginger and green onion that are heated with the oil will be very fragrant, making the fish less fishy.
Wishing you success!
