The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has classified lemon eucalyptus oil, a mosquito repellent registered with the EPA, as an effective ingredient in mosquito repellents.
In a study published in June 2014 in the journal Fitoterapia, lemon eucalyptus oil was found to provide 100% protection against mosquitoes for up to 12 hours. It is a highly effective mosquito repellent.
However, it is not recommended to be used for children under 3 years old. Additionally, lemon eucalyptus oil also helps relieve common cold symptoms, such as nasal congestion and cough.
Catnip oil, known for its effect on cats, can also be used as an herb and has been shown to repel mosquitoes. The catnip scent repels mosquitoes while being pleasant for humans.
Patchouli oil is a natural insecticide and an effective mosquito repellent, as stated by the Oregon Health & Science University. It can be mixed with other scents, such as lemon or lemongrass, and applied to the skin to create a patchouli scent. However, patchouli oil is a hot oil and direct application may cause a warming sensation and skin rashes. Dilution or the use of other oils is recommended.
According to a study published in July 2016 in the World Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, lemongrass oil is comparable to common mosquito repellents. Mixing lemongrass oil with another essential oil, such as cinnamon bark oil, enhances its repellent effect.
IR3535, a synthetic amino acid, is a common active ingredient in mosquito repellents. It is usually found in cream form and can be purchased at most pharmacies. This amino acid disrupts the mosquito’s sense of smell and provides excellent repellent properties. It is non-toxic and protects against mosquitoes for up to 8 hours.
A portable fan can provide comfort and repel mosquitoes when outdoors on a hot day.
Any pools or stagnant water around your house or yard can become breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Keeping the area around your home well-ventilated and clean helps minimize mosquitoes. Clear roof gutters, ensure rain does not accumulate in trash cans, and turn flower pots or other unused containers upside down.
