Sprinkle this powder on the carpet, and the smell and urine stains will quickly disappear without the need for washing.

Families with young children and pets often struggle with the lingering smell of urine on their floors and carpets. While the floors can be easily cleaned, what about the carpets? It becomes quite a hassle and time-consuming to have to wash them every time they get wet with urine.

If you have young children or pets (dogs and cats), they are prone to getting urine on the carpet. While urine can evaporate, it still leaves behind residue, yellow stains, and a foul smell on the carpet if not cleaned immediately. On the other hand, if not properly cleaned, pets will continue to urinate in that area out of habit, making the odor worse. To clean the carpet more quickly, try the following methods as soon as urine stains appear.

1. Cleaning fresh urine stains

If the urine is fresh: place an old towel or some newspapers on the area with urine. If necessary, replace the newspapers until they absorb all the urine.

Clean the urine stain with cold water. Pour some cold water on the urine spot and blot it dry with a towel or a t-shirt. Repeat this a few times.

Removing stains in urine

Using ammonia:

To remove stains, mix a cup of water with 2 tablespoons of ammonia and pour it into a spray bottle. Apply it on the desired area and clean that area with a brush.

Using hydrogen peroxide, dish soap, and baking soda:

Mix the mentioned ingredients in the following ratio and pour it into a spray bottle, then spray it on the urine stain. Leave it for 10 to 20 minutes and then clean the area with a brush or a sponge:

– 2 to 3 drops of dish soap

– 3 tablespoons of baking soda

– 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide

Using pet stain removers:

You can buy these sprays from pet stores. These sprays not only remove stains but also contain odor neutralizers for urine and prevent pets from urinating in the same spot.

Eliminating urine odor

You can use baking soda or cornstarch. These two powders are natural odor eliminators and you can use them in 2 ways.

First method: Sprinkle a large amount of baking soda or cornstarch on the desired area so that there is a thick layer covering the urine spot. Leave it for 24 hours, then clean it with a vacuum cleaner.

Second method: If the urine odor is strong, mix baking soda or cornstarch with a little water until it becomes a paste, then apply it to the desired area. Scrub the area with a brush, then let it sit overnight and use a vacuum cleaner to remove all the powder from the carpet.

You can also use vinegar. Pour a small amount of white vinegar into a small spray bottle and spray it on the urine spot, then use a cloth or a brush to scrub the area clean. However, you should note: Do not use vinegar before removing the stain, as doing so will make the stain worse. Vinegar is only used to eliminate odor.

2. For old urine stains

– Mix baking soda with water. Pour this mixture onto the location of the urine stain, and leave it for 1-2 minutes.

– Use a toothbrush to scrub the mixture

– Use a vacuum cleaner or a clean cloth to remove all the powder from the carpet

– Use vinegar to remove the odor the same way as mentioned above to get rid of the urine smell

In addition, you can use rubbing alcohol to eliminate the urine smell

Method: Blot the urine spot dry with a towel, then pour alcohol onto the urine spot, scrub back and forth to clean. For old urine stains, repeat this process several times for the best results.

3. Post-cleaning steps

– Clean the carpet area with shampoo and let it dry completely.

– Use a black light

A black light can help detect urine spots, and you can see if the remaining part of the carpet has any urine stains. If you don’t have a black light, you can install a mobile app called “black light” and check the desired area to ensure there are no stains.

4. Note:

The sunlight can easily eliminate the odor, if possible, place the carpet outside in the sun. Note that sunlight may slightly fade the color of the mentioned item.

In addition, using a mixture of water and vinegar will also neutralize the odor.

Note: If you have a cat at home, do not clean the urine spot with ammonia and vinegar as the cat will urinate there again.
