This market only convenes for a few days at the start of spring, yet it attracts a large number of buyers. It coincides with the time when farmers begin to transplant rice seedlings to fill in gaps left by dead rice plants. Thus, young rice seedlings are in high demand, with almost every household requiring them.
Located at the entrance of Cho Con, the bustling marketplace for young rice seedlings is a lively sight. Sellers display their bundles of seedlings along the roadside, while buyers stop by to inspect the merchandise, haggle over prices, and make their purchases. The atmosphere is simple yet vibrant with active trading.
According to locals, this market formed due to the supply and demand imbalance of young rice seedlings among households. Those with excess seedlings from dense planting will sell them to those in need. Towards the end of the year, farmers usually sow rice seedlings in preparation for the new crop, but after the Tet holiday, many rice fields are damaged by pests or golden apple snails, resulting in increased rice plant deaths. Therefore, buying additional seedlings to fill in the gaps becomes necessary.
The seedlings sold in the market primarily come from households that planted too densely and needed to thin them out, or from those who had already planted enough for their fields and wanted to sell the excess. In contrast, buyers are typically households without a backup plan or those who hadn’t grown enough seedlings.
Each bundle of seedlings sold in the market is compact, about the size of a fist, containing over 100 rice plants. After being pulled from the field, the seedlings are cleaned of mud and bundled for sale. Sellers neatly arrange the bundles on the sidewalk for buyers’ convenience. Prices depend on size, maturity, and rice variety, typically ranging from 10,000 to 15,000 VND per bundle. Sellers can earn a few hundred thousand VND per day, while buyers sometimes spend between 500,000 and over 1,000,000 VND to acquire enough seedlings to fill in their fields.
As soon as the bundles are laid out, they attract buyers’ attention. Customers not only observe the seedlings’ vitality but also inquire about the planting time and rice variety. Taller, healthier plants with longer roots are preferred as they quickly establish themselves when transplanted and grow well.
Many locals are delighted to find suitable seedlings, as failing to fill in gaps in time would result in reduced yield for the new crop season. Immediately after purchasing the seedlings, they head to their fields to plant them, ensuring the young rice can catch up with the previously sown crop.
