Water spinach is a versatile ingredient used in many delicious Vietnamese dishes such as garlic stir-fried water spinach, or simply boiled water spinach with fermented shrimp paste. If you’re a fan of this tasty green, why not try growing your own at home with this simple basket gardening method that ensures a quick harvest?
1. Prepare Your Gardening Tools
Gardening Tools
- Plastic basket/container
- Plastic tub/basin
- Sponge for planting
- Water spinach seeds
- Hydroponic solution
- 300-400g of lime
Tips:
– Opt for a basket/container with a moderate height of 15cm and a length of 20-25cm.
– Water spinach seeds are readily available and easy to germinate, so you can find them at any agricultural store or supermarket.
– The hydroponic solution and lime can also be easily sourced from agricultural supply stores.
2. Step-by-Step Guide to Growing Water Spinach in a Basket
Step 1 Germinate the Seeds
Germinating Seeds
Start by arranging the planting sponges in the plastic basket and moistening them with water. Place 2-3 seeds in each sponge.
Use a plastic tub/basin that is slightly larger than the base of your basket, and pour in a small amount of hydroponic solution.
Note: As mentioned, water spinach is easy to grow, but to prevent any contamination from the water source, it’s advisable to treat it with lime. Dissolve 300-400g of lime in 10-12 liters of clean water, and after about 20 minutes, filter the solution to obtain 6-8 liters of treated water.
Step 2 Caring for Your Water Spinach
Caring for Water Spinach
After two days, when the seedlings have grown to about 1-2cm in length and have sprouted leaves, gently spray the hydroponic solution onto the sponges to provide the plants with essential nutrients for faster growth.
Six days later, soak the sponges in the hydroponic solution in the tub/basin.
For the first five days, avoid exposing the seedlings to direct sunlight, but after that, they can be placed outdoors as they thrive in sunny conditions.
Remember to keep the sponges moist by adding more solution as needed during the care process.
Step 3 Harvesting Your Water Spinach
Harvesting Water Spinach
Water spinach grows remarkably fast, especially in a hydroponic environment, so you can expect to harvest your crop in less than two weeks.
This basket gardening method allows you to grow water spinach all year round, but for best results and to minimize pest issues, it’s recommended to plant during the summer season.
