Easily Prick with Chopsticks
When purchasing honey, you can use chopsticks to test its quality. If you can easily prick the chopsticks to the bottom of the jar, stir it and feel it softening, touch it with your fingers without a gritty sensation, and it melts in your mouth, then it is delicious honey. If you feel resistance and have to apply force to prick the chopsticks into the jar, it indicates that the honey has been adulterated with white sugar.
Honey Does Not Penetrate Paper
When buying honey, you can try dripping a few drops onto paper. If the honey does not seep out and retains its shape, it is a sign of pure honey. If the honey easily soaks through the paper, it has likely been diluted with water.
Dripping Honey into a Glass of Water
If you drip honey into a glass of water and it sinks straight to the bottom, it indicates pure honey. If the honey encounters water and dissolves immediately, it is of inferior quality.
In addition to the above tests, you should avoid buying honey if you observe the following:
Honey Attracts Ants
PGS.TS Nguyen Duy Thinh advises that to test the purity of honey, you can drip a few drops onto a piece of paper and place it where ants frequently appear. Pure honey contains antibiotics, which ants tend to avoid. On the other hand, honey adulterated with sugar or sweeteners will easily attract ants.
Honey with a Sugary Aroma
Authentic honey will have a distinctive floral fragrance (depending on the type of flower from which the bees collected nectar, each variety of honey will have a unique scent). In contrast, fake honey will smell like sugar or other spices.
Some Notes on Honey Consumption
Do Not Mix Excessive Honey at Once
When mixing, use only 2-3 spoonfuls of honey at a time. Consuming too much honey can lead to elevated blood sugar levels and may cause bloating or diarrhea.
Do Not Combine Honey with Tofu Pudding or Tofu
In traditional Chinese medicine, tofu pudding has a sweet taste and a cold nature, helping to clear heat and dissipate blood stasis. When combined with tofu pudding or tofu, which also has cooling properties, it can lead to diarrhea.
Do Not Mix Honey with Raw Garlic or Onion
According to traditional Chinese medicine, garlic and onion are warm in nature and have a dispersing effect. This can lead to qi deficiency when combined with honey, which is neutral in nature. Additionally, the organic acids in honey can react with amino acids in onions, resulting in a biochemical reaction that may be harmful to the body.
