Changing your car’s paint color to match your fortune, or simply because you prefer a different color that’s not available for your car model, is a common desire for many. However, doing so without proper permission is against the law. So, can vehicle owners legally change their car’s paint color? And how can they apply for a color change without incurring fines? Let’s explore these questions in the article below.

1Procedure for Changing Your Car’s Paint Color

Step 1 Visit the Vehicle Registration Authority and Submit Your Application

Prepare a complete set of documents, including the following:

  • Vehicle Registration Application (as per the prescribed form in the Circular).
  • Owner’s identification: National ID card/Citizen ID card. If you don’t have an ID card or your registered permanent address doesn’t match the one on your vehicle registration application, you must present your household registration book.
  • Original Vehicle Registration Certificate

Note: Bring your vehicle for inspection.

Step 2 As the Vehicle Owner, You Must Declare and Seek Permission to Change the Paint Color

Clause 2, Article 6 of Circular 58/2020 of the Ministry of Public Security clearly states that before changing any characteristics of the paint color (including additional markings or advertisements), the vehicle owner must declare this intention on the electronic information page of the Traffic Police Department under the section for declaring vehicle modifications and paint color changes. Alternatively, the owner can directly visit the vehicle registration authority to obtain permission.

Step 3 The Vehicle Registration Authority Will Inspect Your Application and Vehicle

Upon receiving your application, the vehicle registration authority will examine your documents and inspect your vehicle. They will then inform you of the applicable fees for re-registering your vehicle. The fee for changing or re-issuing a vehicle registration certificate for a motorcycle is 50,000 VND (as per Circular No. 229/2016/TT-BTC).
