Microplastics are becoming an increasing global concern, as these tiny particles can easily enter the human body in various ways, particularly through food and drinks.

Previous studies have indicated that microplastics, including polystyrene, polyethylene, polypropylene, and polyethylene terephthalate, are present in our tap water, with quantities varying depending on the water quality of each region.

Meanwhile, a new study published in the United States found that, on average, a liter of bottled water contains nearly 250,000 invisible microplastic particles. In this study, researchers examined five samples of bottled water from three popular brands. After calculations, they found that the density of microplastic particles ranged from 110,000 to 400,000 particles/liter, with an average of about 240,000 particles/liter.

According to scientists, the accidental absorption of toxins from microplastics can cause hormonal imbalances in humans, affecting brain structure, respiratory and digestive systems, and weakening the immune system. Especially, if pregnant women absorb too much microplastics, it can easily lead to miscarriage. At this point, there are no specific figures determining the allowable amount of microplastics in water and food. However, the extremely negative impact of microplastics on human health is undeniable.

In light of this, a group of scientists from Guangzhou Medical University and Shandong University (China) has found a relatively simple and effective method to remove them from drinking water.

This method involves a combination of boiling and filtering out any sediment present in the water. Despite its apparent simplicity, this approach is highly effective in combating microplastics.

According to the published study, up to 90% of nano and microplastics can be removed through boiling and filtering, although the effectiveness may vary depending on the type of water.

From the perspective of users, the most significant advantage is that we can perform this process with readily available kitchen equipment.

“Boiling water before drinking is a simple and effective method. This process has been proven to remove microplastics from tap water and reduce human absorption through water consumption,” the researchers emphasized.

However, it is important to note that we should still filter the water before drinking to remove any lime scale (calcium carbonate) formed during the boiling process. This filtration can be easily achieved using a tea strainer.

The research team hopes that by raising awareness about the harmful effects of microplastics and providing a simple removal method, the habit of drinking boiled water will gain popularity, especially given the ongoing global plastic waste crisis.

How to Drink Boiled Water for Better Health

Many people mistakenly believe that boiled water is absolutely sterile and can be stored for several days. In reality, bacteria can appear as early as two hours after boiling, and their numbers will increase after 24 hours. Therefore, to protect your health, it is recommended to consume boiled water within the same day and avoid storing it for extended periods. Additionally, avoid pouring freshly boiled water into a container with previously boiled water, as this can promote bacterial growth.

While it is common to boil a large batch of water to last for a few days, it is not advisable to drink boiled water that has been left overnight. It is best to consume boiled water within the same day and not store it for more than three days. Prolonged storage of boiled water can lead to the formation of nitric acid (NO3), a carcinogen, and the presence of heavy metals, which are harmful to health.
