Plant-based milk, or milk made from nuts and grains, is a delicious and healthy alternative to dairy. For example, soy milk, walnut milk, hazelnut milk, and mung bean milk are all types of plant-based milk.
Plant-based milk is typically made from all-natural ingredients and contains no preservatives. It is also packed with nutrients that can help reduce the risk of high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and diabetes.
Plant-based milk is naturally prepared and free from preservatives.
Given these benefits, it’s no wonder that plant-based milk is gaining popularity among consumers, whether as a beverage or a meal replacement.
The Best Way to Store Plant-Based Milk
It is important to let plant-based milk cool down completely before storing it in bottles or jars. If left at room temperature, it will spoil quickly, usually by the afternoon of the same day it was made.
To extend its shelf life, store the cooled milk in the refrigerator. The ideal temperature for storage is between 3-5 degrees Celsius, and milk stored at this temperature will last for up to 3-4 days.
The maximum shelf life of homemade plant-based milk is 3-4 days when refrigerated.
Avoid storing the milk on the door of the refrigerator, as this area is susceptible to temperature fluctuations, which can cause the milk to spoil.
Tips for Storing Plant-Based Milk
For optimal taste and nutritional value, it is best to consume plant-based milk within 24 hours of preparation. Do not seal the container while the milk is still hot, as this can cause condensation and lead to spoilage.
Unsweetened plant-based milk can be stored for up to 3 days at a temperature of 3-5 degrees Celsius. However, sweetened varieties, such as almond, walnut, and cashew milk, should be consumed within 1-2 days. These types of milk will spoil if left at room temperature for more than 3 hours.
It is recommended to consume plant-based milk in moderate amounts (200-250ml per serving, not exceeding 1 liter per day).
When taking the milk out of the refrigerator, only remove the amount you intend to consume, and promptly return the rest to the fridge. If reheating the milk for children, consume it immediately afterward and do not return it to the refrigerator, as this can cause spoilage.
Lastly, do not consume plant-based milk that has been stored for an extended period, as it does not contain preservatives and can easily ferment, forming clots and producing toxins.
