Pillows are often overlooked during the laundry process, but if they’re not cleaned regularly, they can become a breeding ground for bacteria, sweat, and stubborn yellow stains. Over time, this doesn’t just affect the aesthetics but also hygiene.
According to Express, laundry expert David Smith from Down and Feather shared an effective method to clean and refresh pillows using readily available household items, removing stains without the need for a washing machine.
**You don’t need bleach to effectively whiten pillows**
According to the expert, many people think that bleach is the best solution to whiten pillows. However, David warns that this chemical can cause a reaction that weakens the fabric, affecting the durability of the pillows.
Instead, he recommends using hydrogen peroxide – a gentle yet surprisingly effective cleaning method.
“Hydrogen peroxide is the top choice for treating stubborn stains. In just 10-15 minutes, your pillows can look brand new,” David says.

**How to do it:**
– Mix hydrogen peroxide and water in a 1:1 ratio.
– Apply the solution to the stained area and let it sit for a few minutes.
– Rinse it off with water.
*Note: Before applying, test it on a small area of the fabric to ensure it doesn’t affect the material.*
**Sunlight – Nature’s Bleach**
In addition to the above method, David suggests that sunlight is also an effective whitening agent.
“After washing or treating stains, hang the pillows out to dry in direct sunlight. Sunlight naturally whitens and disinfects. Remember to turn the pillows regularly to ensure even drying before using them again,” he shares.
**Alternative Method: Baking Soda and Lemon Juice**
If you don’t have hydrogen peroxide, you can use a mixture of lemon juice and baking soda as a natural and easy-to-make alternative.
**How to do it:**
– Mix lemon juice with baking soda to form a thick paste.
– Apply it to the yellow stains and gently rub it in.
– Let it sit for about 30 minutes, then rinse it off and let it air dry.
With these simple methods, you can easily clean and whiten your pillows at home without a washing machine, ensuring a fresh and hygienic sleeping space.
