Frequently asked questions

A chip-enabled card, also known as an EMV card, is a standard credit or debit card that contains an embedded microchip as well as a traditional magnetic stripe. The chip provides an additional layer of security when making transactions, as it generates a unique code for each purchase, making it difficult for fraudsters to copy or steal your information.

Using the chip function provides stronger security against fraud compared to swiping. The chip creates a unique transaction code that cannot be used again, making it harder for criminals to create counterfeit cards or access your data.

Insert your card into the ATM as usual. Instead of swiping and signing, you’ll be prompted to enter your Personal Identification Number (PIN). Enter your PIN and follow the on-screen instructions to complete your cash withdrawal. It’s as simple as that!

When making online purchases with your chip-enabled card, you may be asked to provide additional authentication, such as a one-time password (OTP) sent to your mobile device. This two-factor authentication ensures that even if someone has your card details, they won’t be able to complete a transaction without also having access to your phone or email.

One minor inconvenience is that chip transactions may take a few seconds longer to process compared to traditional magnetic stripe transactions. Additionally, some older card readers may not be compatible with chip technology, but these instances are becoming rarer as merchants upgrade their systems.

Report the loss or theft to your card issuer immediately. They will cancel the old card and issue you a new one. In the meantime, you can still use the magnetic stripe on your card to make essential purchases or withdrawals, but be sure to cut up the chip to prevent potential fraud.

Treat your chip-enabled card with the same level of care as you would any other payment card. Don’t share your PIN with anyone, and be cautious when entering it in public places to avoid prying eyes. Additionally, regularly review your transaction history for any unauthorized activity and report it immediately if detected.
