There are several ways to overcome the problem of difficulty sleeping in economy class seats on an airplane.

Choose a seat

Choosing a good seat is a prerequisite for getting a good night’s sleep, especially on long-haul flights. A cramped seat with no legroom will ruin the flying experience. The seat selection fee may be waived depending on your frequent flyer status.

Most people will choose seats near the window or the wall because they allow passengers to lean against the cabin instead of leaning over to someone else’s seat. The downside is that passengers have to step over 2 other seats to get to the restroom.

However, this also depends on the airline you are flying with. Some commercial planes have a seating configuration of 2-4-2. Therefore, passengers sitting by the window only inconvenience one passenger when they want to use the restroom.

The aisle seat is a better option for some people because you won’t have to disturb anyone. The downside of sitting in this row is that you will be awakened by the person next to you if they need to get out of their seat.

Bring necessary items

In addition to a comfortable seat, you should bring some essential items to help you have a restful flight. Some of these items can be an eye mask, earplugs, or a travel pillow.

While you are sleeping, some other passengers may be reading, eating, or working. The bright lights, electronic screens will shine into your eyes. So always bring an eye mask if you don’t want sudden lights to disturb your sleep.

Noises, conversations or loud sounds are also reasons that can disrupt your sleep. Using earplugs or wearing headphones with soft, instrumental music is a suitable choice for you to have a deeper sleep.

A travel pillow will help you sleep better. Ensuring that your neck is properly supported not only helps you fall into a deeper sleep, but also relieves neck fatigue and reduces neck and shoulder pain.

Consult a doctor

If you have completed the above steps and still have difficulty sleeping, you may consider consulting a doctor. They will provide advice and prescribe suitable medication for you.
