In our youth, we often dream of changing the world. When dissatisfied, we think of altering our environment. When threatened, we aim to change others’ minds. Yet, as we mature, we realize the only thing we can truly change is ourselves, to achieve what we desire. It’s like hatching an egg: life is an egg, cracked from the outside it breaks, but from within, it brings new life.

The parable of the leather shoes’ origin illustrates this. Long ago, a king, after a painful journey on rough roads, ordered his ministers to cover all roads with cowhide, believing it would benefit everyone. This led to massive cattle slaughter and depleted the treasury. A servant suggested, “Why not wrap your feet in cowhide instead?” The king, surprised, tried it and created the first pair of leather shoes.
Changing the world or others is hard; changing oneself is easier. To see the world change, start with yourself.
Trying to Change Others is ‘Futile Effort’
Daily, we hear complaints: “Why won’t you change?” or “How can I stop you?” These questions arise in relationships, work, and family.
