Over time, due to hard water, limescale, and dirt buildup, your showerhead can get clogged, resulting in low water pressure. If you notice a decrease in water flow or a weak spray when using your shower at home, there might be an issue with your showerhead. Before rushing to replace it, try these simple tips to clean and unclog your showerhead first.
Method 1: Detach the Showerhead and Remove the Limescale
Detach the showerhead from the hose and place it in a container.
To conserve vinegar and other ingredients, opt for a smaller container.
Add a few teaspoons of salt and ⅓ cup of baking soda to the vinegar. The acidic nature of this mixture will help dissolve minerals and limescale.
Soak the showerhead for 30 minutes to overnight. If you’re in a hurry, you can remove it after 30 minutes, but it’s best to leave it overnight. Alternatively, you can boil a 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water for 10-15 minutes and let it cool completely before using it.
Use a descaling solution or spray: Apply a descaling solution or spray to break down limescale buildup. These materials will help remove any remaining particles. If the showerhead is already clean from the previous steps, skip this step.
Rinse the showerhead with water and use a toothbrush to scrub all its parts. Use a toothpick to clean the holes. Rinse until no more dirt comes out. Finally, reattach the showerhead and let the water run for a few minutes.
Method 2: Clean the Showerhead Without Detaching It
Fill a plastic bag with vinegar and baking soda.
Use a plastic bag and fill it with ⅓ cup of baking soda for every cup of vinegar. Secure the bag to the showerhead with a thin string or thread.
Let it sit for at least an hour, but preferably overnight, to ensure a thorough cleaning. After removing the bag, turn on the shower to rinse away any remaining residue. Use a toothbrush to clean the holes and remove any debris. Finally, run the shower to flush out any remaining debris.
