Vietnam Successfully Cultivates World-Renowned Premium Fruit, Harvesting for Years as a Specialty Priced at 200,000 VND/kg

Despite its limited large-scale cultivation due to stringent climate and soil requirements, blueberries have become a favorite among gardening enthusiasts. These plants not only enhance balconies and gardens but also allow for the harvest of fresh, juicy berries right at home.

Blueberries (Vaccinium spp.) originate from North America and are perennial shrubs thriving in cool climates with cold winters and acidic soil. Major producers include the United States, Canada, Chile, Peru, Poland, and others, supplying the global market with this sought-after fruit.

Blueberries are small, measuring 1-2 cm in diameter, with a round shape. When ripe, their skin turns deep blue-purple, coated with a natural white bloom that protects the fruit. Inside, the flesh is soft, juicy, and filled with tiny, nearly imperceptible seeds.

The allure of blueberries lies in their perfectly balanced sweet and slightly tart flavor. Berries ripened naturally on the bush tend to be more aromatic and sweeter than imported varieties harvested early for long-distance transport. This delightful taste makes blueberries a favorite across all ages.

Beyond fresh consumption, blueberries are a versatile ingredient in various dishes and beverages. They are used in smoothies, juices, yogurt, fruit salads, jams, and syrups. Popular baked goods like blueberry muffins, cheesecakes, pancakes with blueberry sauce, and blueberry ice cream are beloved by many. During summer, families often preserve blueberries in sugar to make refreshing drinks or pair them with tea for a visually appealing and delicious beverage.

In Vietnam, fresh blueberries are primarily imported. Depending on origin, season, and quality, prices range from 200,000 to 400,000 VND per kilogram. The market also offers frozen, dried, and juiced blueberries, along with other processed products.

The popularity of blueberries has spurred growing interest in home cultivation. On gardening forums, enthusiasts share images of lush blueberry bushes adorned with tiny white flowers and clusters of vibrant purple berries. Many families grow them on balconies, rooftops, or in gardens as both ornamental and fruit-bearing plants.

Compared to other fruit trees, blueberries are compact, typically growing 0.8 to 2 meters tall depending on the variety. Their evergreen leaves turn reddish-orange in autumn for some varieties, adding aesthetic appeal. During flowering, the plants produce small, bell-shaped white or pale pink blooms, enhancing their beauty before fruiting.

However, blueberries are considered one of the more finicky fruit plants. Successful cultivation has been achieved in cooler regions like Lam Dong and northern mountainous provinces, but on a limited scale, primarily for research, small-scale production, or experiential models. Vietnam’s tropical climate remains a challenge for large-scale cultivation.

For home growers, container planting is the most common solution. Most opt for pre-grown seedlings instead of seeds to reduce care time. Seedling prices range from a few hundred thousand to over one million VND, depending on variety and size. With proper care, plants can bear fruit within 1-2 years and continue to produce steadily for many years.
