Every day, cooking delicious meals for the family, sewing cute clothes, or dyeing clothes to make them look fresh is the joy of many women. This is also true for Le Ngoc Hao Vy, a Vietnamese girl who is living and working in California – USA.
Contacting Hao Vy, a 9X friend, told Tintuconline that she loves nature very much. “Since I was a child, I have always liked to explore new things. I always know how to create my own happiness and be less affected by the negative environment“.
While studying and living in the US, this modern young woman still maintains the traditional beauty of Vietnamese women. She likes to take care of the kitchen, embroider, sew, and has great experiences with dyeing fabric, dyeing clothes made by herself. The special thing is that all of these are natural ingredients available in the kitchen.
Hao Vy’s work. Beautiful white crop top made from leftover fabric and completely dyed from natural ingredients, avocado skin, and avocado seeds.
Recently, Hao Vy personally made a unique gift for her mother-in-law on her birthday. It is dyeing a white shirt into pastel purple color from butterfly pea flowers, which is extremely gentle and cute. Handmade gifts may not have much material value, but they have all the effort and love of the person who made them. Hao Vy’s mother-in-law was very happy and often wears the shirt given by her daughter-in-law.
Especially, the process of dyeing this shirt is completely done with natural ingredients available in the kitchen. Even just avocado skin and seeds after eating are not thrown away but dried and used as dyeing materials. It is both economical, not having to buy harmful industrial dyes, and environmentally friendly.
The specific process of dyeing fabric using natural ingredients that any mother can do, which Hao Vy shared as follows:
1. Ingredients:
– Fabric or clothes to dye.
– Dried avocado skin and seeds. Dry for 14 days in the intense sun.
– Water, soap.
Avocado skin and seeds are dried and boiled to create colors.
2. Tools:
– Gloves if afraid of getting stained or can also use bare hands.
– A used pot.
– Stainless steel clips for soaking fabric in hot water.
– Use old chopsticks to remove the clothes.
3. Steps:
Step 1: Soak the fabric (or clothes) in water to soften the fabric fibers.
Step 2: Put avocado skin and seeds into the pot and pour about 2 liters of water (if it seems insufficient, more water can be added).
Step 3: Cook on medium heat for about 45 minutes to 1 hour until the avocado skin and seeds turn dark brown. If you want a darker color, increase the cooking time by about 30 – 45 more minutes.
Step 4: Remove some avocado skin and seeds from the pot.
Step 5: Squeeze the fabric or clothes to remove excess water and then soak them in the pot of avocado skin water and cook over low heat for another 15 minutes. Use clips or old chopsticks to turn the clothes in the water for even color absorption.
Step 6: Turn off the heat and let it cool overnight.
Step 7: Squeeze the fabric or clothes to remove water and dry.
Step 8: Wash the clothes with mild soap.
Step 9: Use the cooled dyeing water to fertilize plants.

After being dyed, soaked, and dried, it has turned into a soft pastel purple shirt as a gift for her mother-in-law.
Not only dyeing clothes, Hao Vy is also very skillful in embroidering 3 small cute flower buttons…
… to make clothing labels.
Put it in a box, tie a bow. That’s how you have successfully completed a meaningful gift for your mother-in-law.
The color chart of the products that Hao Vy has achieved:
Depending on each ingredient and cooking time, you can achieve your favorite color. For families with timers on the stove, you can just set the time and do other things.
– Orange to brown color: Avocado peel and Hass avocado seeds, coffee, black tea.
– Cream color: Green tea bags.
– Yellow color: Fresh turmeric, fresh turmeric powder is not as good as fresh turmeric.
– Pink color: Hibiscus flowers, avocado peel and seeds boiled on low heat.
– Purple color: Butterfly pea flowers.
– Emerald color: Butterfly pea flowers + baking soda.
To succeed in fabric dyeing, women should note the following tips:
– Only use fabrics made from natural materials (cotton, linen, hemp…). This formula does not apply to synthetic fabrics.
– This method can also be applied to dyeing natural wool fibers which give beautiful colors.
– Each type of fabric will produce different shades.
– The color will fade after the first few washes and then stabilize, so a small trick is to dye it darker to counterbalance fading.
– Always use a small piece of cloth to test the color before actually dyeing it on the clothes.
– Most natural colors will be light pastel colors, not as strong as industrial chemicals.
– Avocado skin and seeds will produce colors from light pink to coral if boiled lightly or orange to brown if boiled vigorously.
– It is better to wash dyed clothes by hand and dry them in the sun to make the fabric and color last longer.
– Do not wash or dry with a washing machine, as it can easily fade the fabric.

Now sisters are ready to go to the kitchen to try their hands at dyeing, using completely natural ingredients like the Vietnamese girl in the US, right?
Good luck!
