1 Why are Magnetic Stripe ATM Cards Being Phased Out?
Bank customers have been receiving notifications regarding the discontinuation of magnetic stripe ATM cards. Specifically, after December 31, 2021, magnetic stripe ATM cards will no longer be functional and will not be able to facilitate any transactions, including cash withdrawals.
Banks are transitioning from magnetic stripe cards to chip-based cards
This change is in accordance with Circular No. 41/2018/TT-NHNN issued by the State Bank of Vietnam. According to the circular, from December 2, 2018, to December 31, 2021, all payment cards in circulation issued by Vietnamese organizations must comply with the domestic chip card standards.
As a result, banks have stopped issuing magnetic stripe ATM cards since March 31, 2021, and are expediting the transition to domestic chip-based cards to ensure compliance with the circular’s timeline.
Additionally, current users of magnetic stripe ATM cards should contact their banks for guidance and support in switching to chip-based cards.
